Chitraka is a Vrishni Yadava prince, the younger son of Vrishni II (Prishni) and the younger brother of Shvaphalka — the virtuous chief celebrated in the Harivamsha for his power to end drought. Chitraka founded a substantial collateral branch of the Vrishni line through his many sons and two daughters, several of whom appear as named warriors in the battle accounts of the Harivamsha's Vishnu Parva. He appears in the Harivamsha (Harivamsha Parva, Chapter 34), the Vishnu Purana (Book IV, Chapter XIV), and the Garuda Purana's genealogical section. His sons Viprithu and Gaveshi are specifically mentioned as combatants in the battle account of Krishna's abduction of Rukmini (Harivamsha, Vishnu Parva, Chapter 60), where they fight against Shishupala's forces. Chitraka himself appears as a warrior alongside Shvaphalka in the Harivamsha's Vishnu Parva battle narrative.

Chitraka is a Sanskrit compound from chitra (variegated, bright, wonderful, picture, or mark) with the suffix -ka, conveying the sense of "the bright one," "the wonderfully marked one," or "the brilliant one." The name is also the name of a plant (Plumbago zeylanica) in Sanskrit botanical nomenclature, though no connection to the botanical name is made in the texts. The Vishnu Purana spells the name Chitraka and the Harivamsha uses Chitraka and Chitrika interchangeably across different manuscript traditions.

The Harivamsha's Vishnu Parva (Chapter 59) records Chitraka fighting alongside Shvaphalka and Satyaka as great charioteers whose arrows scattered the army of Kalinga during the battle associated with the abduction of Rukmini. This brief mention establishes that Chitraka was still alive and active as a warrior during the events of Krishna's life at Dvaraka, making him a generational contemporary of Akrura in the military campaigns of the Vrishni forces. His sons Viprithu and Gaveshi are named as individual combatants in the same battle chapter, where Viprithu was pierced by Shishupala and Gaveshi's charioteer was killed.
✦ Textual Variants and Inconsistencies
The Garuda Purana's genealogical section (Ch. CXXXIX, trans. M. N. Dutt) places Vrishni, Shvaphalka, and Chitraka as three sons of Anamitra rather than of Vrishni II, and states that the family obtained the name Vrishni from this Vrishni — giving Chitraka a different paternal attribution in that text. This is consistent with the broader pattern of variation in Shvaphalka's parentage discussed in the Shvaphalka profile. The Vishnu Purana (Book IV, Ch. XIV) names only Prithu and Viprithu among Chitraka's sons and adds "many others," while the Harivamsha (Ch. 34) provides the fuller list. No source gives Chitraka's wife's name.
✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy
Chitraka is the uncle of Akrura and all of Shvaphalka's sons. Through Viprithu and Gaveshi, he is the grandfather of figures who appear as warriors at Dvaraka. His branch of the Vrishnis represents the collateral Chitraka line running parallel to the more prominent Shvaphalka-Akrura line of the same generation, both descending from Vrishni II.
