Satyaka was a Yadava chieftain of the Vrishni sub-clan, belonging to the Satvata lineage that also produced Krishna and Balarama. He stands in the fifth generation from the eponymous ancestor Satvata, through the line Satvata — Vrishni I — Anamitra — Shini — Satyaka. He is principally significant in the tradition as the father of Yuyudhana, better known as Satyaki, one of the foremost warrior-heroes of the Kurukshetra War, and as the grandfather, through a daughter, of Aniruddha, a prince of the Yadava royal house. Satyaka is mentioned in the Harivamsa and receives incidental notice in the Mahabharata in passages establishing the genealogy of his more celebrated son.

The name Satyaka derives from the Sanskrit root satya, meaning truth or reality, with the suffix -ka forming a diminutive or derivative personal name. It may be rendered approximately as "one devoted to truth" or "the truthful one." The patronymic Shineya, borne more prominently by his son Satyaki, reflects descent from Shini, Satyaka's own father, and was applied by extension within the family line.

The primary texts do not record extended narrative episodes centred on Satyaka himself. His significance in the tradition is principally genealogical: he transmits the Shini line forward to his warrior-son Satyaki, and his daughter's marriage into the immediate family of Krishna through Pradyumna reinforces the political and kinship bonds within the Vrishni clan. The Harivamsa, which contains the most detailed genealogical lists of the Yadava sub-clans, provides the basis for his placement in the lineage. The Mahabharata refers to his name chiefly in epithets applied to his son — Satyaki is regularly called "son of Satyaka" in the Udyoga and Drona sections — rather than addressing Satyaka as an independent actor.

The Harivamsa and the Vishnu Purana both list the Vrishni genealogy, but they do not always agree on the number of generations between Vrishni I and Shini. Some recensions of these texts insert additional names between Anamitra and Shini or treat Shini as a more distant descendant. Satyaka occupies a pivotal position in the Vrishni genealogy. Through his son Satyaki he stands as a direct ancestor of Asanga and Yugandhara, the last surviving male heirs of the Vrishni line after the Mausala fratricide. Through his daughter's marriage to Pradyumna — himself the son of Krishna and Rukmini — Satyaka is connected by affinity to the senior Vrishni royal house. Krishna, the most celebrated member of the Vrishni-Yadava tradition, was thus both Satyaka's clansman and, through the marriage of Pradyumna to Satyaka's daughter, his son-in-law once removed by the Yadava reckoning of kinship.
