About

Sukumara — Second Kekaya Brother, Pandava Ally at Kurukshetra

Sukumara · Sukumara of Kekeya

Sukumara is a prince of the Kekeya realm, one of the five sons of Dhrishtaketu king of Kekeya and Shrutakirti — daughter of Shurasena the Yadava chieftain and sister of Vasudeva the father of Krishna. He is attested in the Mahabharata as the second among the five Kekeya brothers who aligned with the Pandavas at Kurukshetra, named individually at Udyoga Parva chapter 172. He fought as part of the combined Kekaya fraternal unit throughout the war. Beyond his name and his collective participation alongside his brothers in the Pandava forces, no independent narrative episode is attested for Sukumara in any primary source consulted. The Wisdomlib definition entry for Dhrishtaketu of Kekeya records a figure named Sukumara in its full-text index in close association with the Kekeya family, consistent with his position as Dhrishtaketu's son, though it does not elaborate further.

✦ The Name

The name Sukumara is a Sanskrit compound of su, meaning good, fine, or auspicious, and kumara, meaning youth, prince, or young man — yielding the sense of the fine youth or the auspicious prince. It is a name used for several distinct figures in the broader Puranic and epic tradition, including a son of Svaphalka attested in the Harivamsha. The qualifier of Kekeya is therefore essential for identifying this specific individual.

✦ Lineage

  • Father: Dhrishtaketu — king of Kekeya, Pandava ally
  • Mother: Shrutakirti — daughter of Shurasena, sister of Vasudeva
  • Brothers: Vrihatkshatra — eldest, killed by Drona on day fourteen; Nila, Suryadatta, and Shankha — younger brothers, all Pandava allies
  • Sister: Bhadra — eighth of the Ashtabharya of Krishna

✦ Role in the Kurukshetra War

Sukumara fought as part of the five-brother Kekaya unit within the Pandava army throughout the war. The brothers are consistently addressed collectively in the battle narrative as the Kekaya brothers or the five Kekaya princes, making it difficult to isolate Sukumara's individual actions from those of the fraternal unit as a whole. He participated in the collective killing of Kshamadhurti on the fourteenth day (Drona Parva) alongside his brothers. His fate in the war is not recorded individually in any primary source consulted; the Drona Parva account of the Kekaya brothers' destruction under Drona and Karna covers the group, not each brother by name.
