About

Surabhu — Princess of the Kukura Clan and Wife of Anadhrishti

Surabhu · Surabhuu

Surabhu was the third daughter of King Ugrasena, ruler of Mathura and patriarch of the Kukura sub-clan of the Yadava confederacy. She was a sister of Kamsa, the tyrannical king of Mathura remembered in the Puranic tradition as the principal adversary of Lord Krishna, and a sister of Kamsaa and Kanka, both of whom were likewise given in marriage to younger brothers of Vasudeva — the father of Lord Krishna — from the Vrishni sub-clan. Surabhu's own marriage to Anadhrishti, another Vrishni prince and younger brother of Vasudeva, continued this pattern of reciprocal matrimonial alliance between the Kukura and Vrishni branches of the Yadava family. By birth she carried the Kukura lineage designation; her son by Anadhrishti carried the Vrishni designation inherited from his father. She is recorded in the Bhagavata Purana and the Vishnu Purana.

✦ The Name

The name Surabhu derives from Sanskrit roots carrying connotations of sweetness, fragrance, or pleasant odour — the prefix su denoting goodness or excellence, and rabhu or related forms associated with pleasing qualities. The name is distinct from the more widely known Surabhi, the divine wish-fulfilling cow of Puranic tradition, though the two names share a common etymological root. No additional epithets or titles for Surabhu the daughter of Ugrasena are recorded in the primary sources consulted.

✦ Lineage

  • Father: King Ugrasena — ruler of Mathura and patriarch of the Kukura sub-clan of the Yadavas; Surabhu is born into his line and carries the Kukura lineage designation by birth.
  • Brother: Kamsa — king of Mathura, eldest son of Ugrasena, and the principal antagonist of Lord Krishna in the Puranic narrative.
  • Sister: Kamsaa — daughter of Ugrasena given in marriage to Devabhaga, a younger brother of Vasudeva of the Vrishni sub-clan.
  • Sister: Kanka — daughter of Ugrasena given in marriage to Devasravas, a younger brother of Vasudeva of the Vrishni sub-clan; mother of Shatrughna and of Ekalavya the celebrated archer.
  • Husband: Anadhrishti (also spelled Anadhristi) — a prince of the Vrishni sub-clan of the Yadavas and a younger brother of Vasudeva, the father of Lord Krishna. Through this marriage Surabhu became connected by alliance to the Vrishni branch of the Yadava confederacy.
  • Son: Nighna — son of Surabhu and Anadhrishti; carries the Vrishni lineage designation inherited from his father.

✦ Marriage Alliance and Cross-Branch Significance

The marriage of Surabhu to Anadhrishti is recorded in the Bhagavata Purana and the Vishnu Purana and represents the third in a discernible sequence of matrimonial alliances through which Ugrasena gave daughters of the Kukura house to princes of the Vrishni line. Kamsaa was given to Devabhaga, Kanka to Devasravas, and Surabhu to Anadhrishti — each husband being a younger brother of Vasudeva, who was himself the father of Lord Krishna. This repeated pattern of cross-sub-clan marriage bound the two most prominent branches of the Yadava confederacy into a dense network of bilateral kinship ties.

Because Anadhrishti was a younger brother of Vasudeva, Surabhu stood in the position of a paternal aunt by marriage to Lord Krishna. Her son Nighna was accordingly a first cousin of Krishna on the paternal side through his father's fraternal connection to Vasudeva, while simultaneously being a grandson of Ugrasena and a nephew of Kamsa through his mother's Kukura birth. Surabhu's node in the genealogical tree therefore functions as a further cross-link joining the Kukura royal house of Mathura to the Vrishni branch of the Yadava confederacy, with her descendant exiting the Kukura designation and continuing forward under the Vrishni lineage tag.

✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy

Surabhu belongs to the Kukura branch of the Yadava confederacy through her father Ugrasena. Her husband Anadhrishti was a son of Sura, the Vrishni chieftain regarded as a senior patriarch of that sub-clan, and a brother of Vasudeva. Vasudeva fathered Lord Krishna by his wife Devaki. Anadhrishti, as a son of Sura and brother of Vasudeva, was a paternal uncle of Krishna. Surabhu's son Nighna was consequently a first cousin of Krishna on the paternal side and simultaneously a maternal grandson of the Kukura royal house. This dual lineage inheritance, running through his Vrishni father and his Kukura mother, places Nighna at the same genealogical intersection that characterises the children of Surabhu's sisters Kamsaa and Kanka — each line converging the two dominant sub-clans of the Yadava family as recorded in the Puranic tradition.
