About

Mahibhanu — Paternal Grandfather of Radha

Mahibhanu

Mahibhanu is identified in Rupa Goswami's sixteenth-century Gaudiya Vaishnava genealogical compendium, the Shri Radha-Krishna-Ganoddesha-Dipika, specifically in its Shri Radha-Parijvara-Nirupana section, as the father of Vrishabhanu, the cowherd chieftain of Vraja who is in turn identified as the father of Radha, the eternal consort of Krishna. Mahibhanu is accordingly Radha's paternal grandfather. He is recorded as the husband of Sukhada, also rendered Shukada Devi, who is named in the same source as Radha's paternal grandmother. Mahibhanu's place in the textual record is genealogical rather than narrative: no episode, deed, or independent action is attributed to him in the Shri Radha-Krishna-Ganoddesha-Dipika or in any other source consulted, and his significance lies entirely in his position within the ancestral household from which Radha's father Vrishabhanu descended.

✦ The Name

The name Mahibhanu is a Sanskrit compound of mahi, meaning the earth, and bhanu, meaning light, splendour, or sun, the same solar element that appears in the names of his son Vrishabhanu and Vrishabhanu's brothers Bhanu, Subhanu, and Ratnabhanu. The compound may be rendered as the splendour of the earth or the sun of the earth, continuing within his own name the solar naming convention that, according to the Gaudiya genealogical tradition, characterises the entire Bhanu family line descending structurally from the apex ancestor Suryabhanu.

✦ Lineage

  • Spouse: Sukhada (also Shukada Devi) — named in the Shri Radha-Krishna-Ganoddesha-Dipika as Mahibhanu's wife and as Radha's paternal grandmother.
  • Son: Vrishabhanu — cowherd chieftain of Vraja, identified in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, the Garga Samhita, and the Shri Radha-Krishna-Ganoddesha-Dipika as the father of Radha, the eternal consort of Krishna. Vrishabhanu shared the chieftainship of his branch of the Vraja cowherds with his brothers Bhanu, Subhanu, and Ratnabhanu.
  • Granddaughter: Radha — daughter of Vrishabhanu and his wife Kirtida Devi, venerated across the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, the Padma Purana's Uttara Khanda, the Garga Samhita, and the wider Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition as the foremost of the gopis of Vraja and as the eternal consort of Krishna, identified theologically as his Hladini Shakti, the personification of his own potency of divine bliss.

✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy

Mahibhanu occupies the position of paternal grandfather within the household from which Radha descended, situating him within the cowherd community of Vraja associated with Krishna's youth. Through his son Vrishabhanu and granddaughter Radha, Mahibhanu's household is connected to the central relationship of Gaudiya Vaishnava theology — that of Radha and Krishna as the Hladini Shakti and its possessor — though Mahibhanu himself stands at one remove from this relationship, as an ancestral figure rather than a participant in its narrative or theological elaboration.
