About
Parjanya — Son of Bhurishravas and Prince of the Bahlika Kingdom
Parjanya · Prayanja · Bhurishravasaputra
Parjanya was a prince of the Bahlika kingdom and a son of Bhurishravas, the Kaurava Maharathi commander who was killed by Satyaki on the fourteenth day of the Kurukshetra War. He was the grandson of King Somadatta of Bahlika and the great-grandson of King Bahlika, elder brother of Shantanu of Hastinapur. Like his brother Pratipa, Parjanya fought on the Kaurava side at Kurukshetra and was killed by Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna. Parjanya receives no individual narrative episode in the primary text and is recorded essentially as a named casualty alongside his brother. His name appears in variant spellings across different editions and secondary references, including Prayanja, a variant found in the Wikipedia article on Bhurishravas.
✦ The Name
The name Parjanya is a well-attested Sanskrit term denoting the rain cloud, the rain-god, or the deity of rain and thunder hymned in the Rigveda. In Vedic cosmology, Parjanya is an important atmospheric deity associated with life-giving rainfall, the fertilisation of the earth, and the destruction of evil forces. As a personal name its use carries connotations of divine abundance and celestial power. The name Parjanya is borne by several other figures in the broader Sanskrit tradition — including the grandfather of Nanda Baba and the foster-grandfather of Krishna in the Vrishni Yadava genealogy — and the reuse of this distinguished name for the son of Bhurishravas reflects the conventional practice of drawing on Vedic theological vocabulary for Kshatriya naming. The variant Prayanja recorded in some secondary sources appears to be a corruption or alternate regional rendering.
✦ Lineage
- Great-great-grandfather: Pratipa — King of Hastinapur and patriarch of the extended Kuru lineage, father of Devapi, Bahlika, and Shantanu.
- Great-grandfather: Bahlika — eldest surviving son of Pratipa, founder of the Bahlika kingdom, paternal uncle of Bhishma, and the oldest warrior to fight at Kurukshetra. Killed by Bhima on the fourteenth day of the war.
- Grandfather: Somadatta — King of Bahlika, son of Bahlika. His humiliation at the swayamvara of princess Devaki at the hands of the Vrishni warrior Sini led to his penance to Shiva and the birth of Bhurishravas as a boon-child of vengeance. Killed by Satyaki on the fourteenth day of the war.
- Father: Bhurishravas — Maharathi commander of the Kaurava army, son of Somadatta, and the instrument of the ancestral vendetta against the Sini lineage. He was maimed by Arjuna on the fourteenth day and subsequently killed by Satyaki while sitting in yogic meditation.
- Brother: Pratipa — also a son of Bhurishravas, also killed by Abhimanyu at Kurukshetra.
✦ Death at Kurukshetra
Parjanya was killed by Abhimanyu in the course of the Kurukshetra War alongside his brother Pratipa. Abhimanyu — the son of Arjuna by Subhadra, the sister of Krishna and Balarama, and a warrior acknowledged in the Mahabharata as the equal of the greatest heroes on both sides — inflicted heavy casualties on the Kaurava side across the days in which he fought. The Drona Parva identifies Pratipa and Parjanya as sons of Bhurishravas who fell to Abhimanyu. Their deaths preceded those of their father Bhurishravas, their grandfather Somadatta, and their great-grandfather Bahlika, all of whom perished on the thirteenth and fourteenth days — a sequence in which the younger generation was destroyed before the elder, inverting the usual order of familial death in war.
✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy
Parjanya stood at the fifth generation of the Bahlika collateral branch of the Kuru lunar dynasty. His death at Abhimanyu's hands forms part of the larger pattern of mutual destruction that defines the Bahlika house's end at Kurukshetra. The primary textual tradition offers no account of any descendants of Parjanya, and no post-war narrative is associated with his line. His profile in the tradition is entirely confined to his identity as a son of Bhurishravas and one of the casualties of Abhimanyu's fighting.
