About
Sabhanara — Son of Anu, Progenitor of the Aushinara-Kekaya Branch
Sabhanara · Sabhanala · Sabhanas
Sabhanara is a son of Anu — the fourth son of king Yayati of the Chandravamsha, the Lunar dynasty — and the founder of the principal genealogical sub-branch of the Anu line from which the Aushinara, Sibi, Kekaya, and Madra dynasties ultimately descend. Anu himself was born of Yayati and Sharmishtha, daughter of the asura king Vrshaparvan, and was one of the three sons who refused to accept their father's curse of premature old age. The Bhagavata Purana records that Anu had three sons — Sabhanara, Cakshu, and Paresnu — of whom only the line of Sabhanara is traced forward in the primary genealogical sources. Sabhanara's son Kalanara begins the unbroken chain that leads, over several generations, to Ushinara and the famous king Shibi Ausinara. Sabhanara appears in the Bhagavata Purana (9.23.1), the Vishnu Purana (IV.18), and the Brahma Purana (Chapter 11) as the first figure in this descent.
✦ The Name
The name Sabhanara is a compound of sabha (assembly, council hall, or gathering of men) and nara (man, or hero), yielding the sense of a man of the assembly or one prominent in council — a name connoting civic, royal, or deliberative distinction rather than martial prowess. The Monier-Williams dictionary attests sabhanara as an adjective meaning fit for or belonging to an assembly. The Brahma Purana uses the variant form Sabhanala in some recensions, a minor phonetic variation without difference in meaning.
✦ Lineage
- Dynasty: Chandravamsha (Lunar dynasty), Anu lineage
- Grandfather: Yayati — son of Nahusha, son of Ayu, son of Pururavas; one of the most celebrated kings of the Lunar dynasty, who ruled all the earth and was cursed by Shukracharya to suffer premature old age; he exchanged his old age temporarily with his youngest son Puru and ultimately bequeathed his kingdom to him
- Father: Anu — fourth son of Yayati and Sharmishtha; one of the three sons (with Druhyu and Turvasu) who refused to accept their father's curse and received lesser domains; progenitor of the Anu branch of the Lunar dynasty from which the Aushinara, Sibi, Madra, Kekaya, and associated tribes ultimately descend
- Brothers: Cakshu (Caksu) — son of Anu whose line is not traced in the genealogical sources; Paresnu (also rendered Paramekshu in the Vishnu Purana, Paramanyu in the Brahma Purana) — third son of Anu, also without a traced line
- Son: Kalanara — the only son of Sabhanara recorded in the primary sources; from him the line continues to Srnjaya, Puranjaya, Janamejaya, Mahamani (Mahasala), Mahamana, and finally Ushinara
✦ Textual Record
Sabhanara is attested exclusively in the dynastic genealogical lists of the Puranas and receives no individual narrative treatment in any primary source. His sole function in the textual record is as the genealogical link between Anu and the traced line of descent toward Ushinara. The Bhagavata Purana (9.23.1) states simply that Anu had three sons — Sabhanara, Cakshu, and Paresnu — and that from Sabhanara came Kalanara. The Vishnu Purana (IV.18) gives the same information with minor name variants for the brothers. The Brahma Purana (Chapter 11, verses 15–16) also includes him in the Anu sequence and proceeds immediately to Kalanara. No attributes, reign, or episodes are recorded.
✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy
Sabhanara's genealogical importance lies entirely in his position as the sole traced conduit of the Anu lineage. His brothers Cakshu and Paresnu appear in the sources only as names; their lines are not recorded. The full weight of the Anu branch's subsequent history — including Srnjaya, Ushinara, Shibi, and the four eponymous kingdoms of Vrsadarbha, the Sauviras, Madra, and Kekaya — descends exclusively through Sabhanara's son Kalanara.
