About

Kalanara — Son of Sabhanara, Anu Lineage

Kalanara · Kalanala · Kolahala · Kalanala

Kalanara is a king of the Anu lineage within the Chandravamsha, the Lunar dynasty, and the son of Sabhanara, who was himself the eldest of the three sons of Anu. He is the second figure in the line of descent from Anu toward Ushinara and the famous king Shibi Ausinara, standing between Sabhanara and Srnjaya in the genealogical sequence. Kalanara appears in the Bhagavata Purana (9.23.1), the Vishnu Purana (IV.18), and the Brahma Purana (Chapter 11) within their respective dynastic king-lists, and in the Vayu Purana under the variant name Kalanala. No narrative episode is recorded for him in any primary source.

✦ The Name

The name Kalanara is a compound of kala (time, the appointed time, or the art of music and skill) and nara (man, hero), meaning a man of time, a timely man, or a man of skill and accomplishment. The Brahma Purana and Vayu Purana render the name as Kalanala, substituting nala (a reed, or a stalk) for nara — a minor phonetic variation producing a somewhat different meaning. The Matsya Purana uses the further variant Kolahala, meaning uproar or tumultuous noise, which is etymologically quite different and likely represents a scribal variation rather than an intended alternate name. The Vishnu Purana's footnote (Wilson, note 3 to Chapter XVIII) records these variant forms explicitly across the different Puranic recensions.

✦ Lineage

  • Dynasty: Chandravamsha (Lunar dynasty), Anu lineage
  • Great-grandfather: Yayati — celebrated Lunar king, son of Nahusha; father of the five sons Yadu, Turvasu, Druhyu, Anu, and Puru
  • Grandfather: Anu — fourth son of Yayati and Sharmishtha; progenitor of the Anu branch of the Lunar dynasty
  • Father: Sabhanara — eldest of Anu's three sons; the sole traced conduit of the Anu lineage
  • Son: Srnjaya — next in the line of descent toward Ushinara and Shibi; the Brahma Purana describes him as conversant with virtue

✦ Textual Record and Variants

Kalanara appears in each of his sources solely within the genealogical list, receiving no individual descriptive epithet and no narrative treatment. The Bhagavata Purana (9.23.1) names him as the son of Sabhanara and the father of Srnjaya in a single passing reference. The Vishnu Purana (IV.18) gives the same, with Wilson's accompanying footnote recording the name variants Kalanala (Vayu Purana) and Kolahala (Matsya Purana). The Brahma Purana (11.15–16) calls him Kalanala and notes that he was a learned king. No other attributes are recorded in any primary source.
