Puranjaya is a king of the Anu lineage within the Chandravamsha, the Lunar dynasty, and the son of Srnjaya, who is the son of Kalanara, son of Sabhanara, son of Anu, son of Yayati. He is placed between Srnjaya and Janamejaya in the dynastic sequence preserved by the Vishnu Purana (IV.18), the Brahma Purana (Chapter 11), and the Harivamsa. In the Bhagavata Purana's account (9.23.1–2), however, Puranjaya is absent and Janamejaya is given directly as the son of Srnjaya — a genuine inter-textual discrepancy documented across the primary sources. No individual narrative episode is recorded for this Puranjaya in any source concerned with the Anu lineage. Care is required in identification, as the name Puranjaya is shared by at least two entirely distinct figures in the Puranic tradition — most prominently a Solar dynasty king of the Ikshvaku line who receives extensive treatment in the Bhagavata Purana and Vishnu Purana as a legendary warrior aided by Vishnu — and this Anu-lineage Puranjaya is to be carefully distinguished from all of them.

The name Puranjaya is a compound of pura (city, fort, or stronghold) and jaya (victory, conqueror), meaning conqueror of cities or fortresses — a standard honorific of martial distinction in the kshatriya tradition. As noted, this name is shared by multiple figures in the Puranic corpus. The most prominent is the Ikshvaku Solar king who, by the grace of Vishnu incarnate as Indra's mount, defeated the asuras in the Treta Yuga and was also known as Kakutstha; the Wisdomlib Puranjaya concept page distinguishes him as an entirely separate figure from this Anu-line king.

✦ Textual Variant: Presence and Absence Across Sources
The Vishnu Purana (IV.18) places Puranjaya between Srnjaya and Janamejaya as a distinct generation. The Brahma Purana (11.16–17) confirms the same, calling him a heroic king. The Harivamsa similarly includes him in this position. The Bhagavata Purana (9.23.1–2) omits him entirely, giving Janamejaya as the direct son of Srnjaya. This is a standard compression of the kind seen elsewhere in the Bhagavata's genealogical passages relative to the more expansive Vishnu Purana and Brahma Purana accounts. There is no contradiction in the sources that include Puranjaya — they are in agreement among themselves — and the discrepancy is solely between the Bhagavata and the remaining sources.
