Kshatravarman — Panchala Prince and Warrior Son of Dhrishtadyumna
Kshatravarman · Kshatravarma · Dhrishtadyumnaja · Parshata
Kshatravarman was a prince of the Panchala kingdom and one of the four warrior sons of Dhrishtadyumna — the fire-born commander-in-chief of the Pandava army — and a grandson of King Drupada of Southern Panchala. He fought as an archer and chariot-warrior in the Pandava forces during the Kurukshetra war, taking part in the defence of the Pandava formations against the advance of Drona, who commanded the Kaurava army. He was killed in battle by Drona. His name, lineage, martial role, and death are recorded in the Mahabharata, principally in the Drona Parva, but the primary texts do not preserve extensive individual narrative detail about him beyond these facts.
✦ The Name
The name Kshatravarman is a compound of kshatriya, the warrior class or the martial principle, and varman, meaning armour, shield, or protection. The name carries the sense of one who is armoured in the warrior's way, or who is the protector of the kshatriya order — a designation consistent with his role as a frontline defender in the Pandava army. The clan designation Parshata, derived from Prishat, the ancestor of Drupada, is shared by all male members of the Panchala royal line of this generation.
✦ Lineage
- Father: Dhrishtadyumna, prince of Panchala and commander-in-chief of the Pandava army, born from the sacrificial fire of Drupada's Putrakameshti Yajna and destined from birth to slay Drona.
- Paternal grandfather: Drupada, king of Southern Panchala, adversary of Drona and the figure whose desire for vengeance set in motion the events that produced both Dhrishtadyumna and Draupadi.
- Paternal aunt: Draupadi, also called Krishnaa and Panchali, twin sister of Dhrishtadyumna, who became the common wife of the five Pandava brothers.
- Paternal uncles: Shikhandi, a Panchala prince who fought in the Kurukshetra war and brought about the fall of Bhishma; and Satyajit, a Panchala warrior on the Pandava side.
- Brothers: Kshatradharman, Kshatranjaya, and Dhrishtaketu — all of whom fought and died in the Kurukshetra war.
✦ Military Training
Like his brothers, Kshatravarman is associated in the Drona Parva with a period of intensive pre-war martial training conducted under conditions of ascetic discipline. The text connects this training with Bhishma, the grand-patriarch of the Kuru line, indicating that the sons of Dhrishtadyumna received instruction in advanced weaponry from one of the tradition's supreme masters of arms before taking the field at Kurukshetra.
✦ Role in the Kurukshetra War and Death
Kshatravarman served in the Pandava army during the Kurukshetra war as a chariot-warrior and archer operating within the defensive formations commanded by his father. The Drona Parva places him among the princes who actively opposed Drona's penetration of the Pandava lines, an assault Drona prosecuted with the specific aim of reaching and capturing Yudhishthira — the eldest Pandava and king — which would have effectively ended the war in the Kaurava favour. Kshatravarman engaged in this resistance and was killed by Drona in the course of it. The primary text does not specify the precise day of battle on which he fell, but his death falls within the period of Drona's command of the Kaurava forces, which ran from the eleventh to the fifteenth day of the war.
