Kshatranjaya — Panchala Prince and Warrior Son of Dhrishtadyumna

Kshatranjaya · Kshatramjaya · Dhrishtadyumnaja · Parshata

Kshatranjaya was a prince of the Panchala kingdom and one of the four warrior sons of Dhrishtadyumna — the fire-born prince who served as commander-in-chief of the Pandava army — and a grandson of King Drupada of Southern Panchala. He fought in the Pandava forces during the Kurukshetra war and was killed in battle by Drona. The Drona Parva of the Mahabharata, which provides the principal textual record of his existence, notes his courage during his training years. Beyond his lineage, his military participation, and his death, the primary sources do not preserve substantial individual narrative concerning him.

✦ The Name

The name Kshatranjaya combines kshatriya, the warrior class or the martial principle, with jaya, meaning victory or one who conquers. The name signifies one who is victorious in the way of the warrior, or the conqueror among kshatriyas — an honorific designation in keeping with the naming conventions of the Panchala martial line. The clan epithet Parshata, tracing the lineage to the ancestor Prishat, is shared across the male members of this generation of the Panchala royal family.

✦ Lineage

  • Father: Dhrishtadyumna, prince of Panchala and commander-in-chief of the Pandava army, born from the sacred fire of Drupada's Putrakameshti Yajna, and the man destined from birth to kill Drona.
  • Paternal grandfather: Drupada, king of Southern Panchala, whose enmity with Drona was the originating cause of the sacrifice that produced Dhrishtadyumna and Draupadi.
  • Paternal aunt: Draupadi, also called Krishnaa and Panchali, twin sister of Dhrishtadyumna, who became the common wife of the five Pandava brothers.
  • Paternal uncles: Shikhandi, a Panchala prince who fought at Kurukshetra and brought about the fall of Bhishma; and Satyajit, a Panchala warrior on the Pandava side.
  • Brothers: Kshatradharman, Kshatravarman, and Dhrishtaketu — all of whom served and died in the Kurukshetra war.

✦ Military Training and Noted Courage

The Drona Parva singles out Kshatranjaya among his brothers with a specific note regarding his courage during his years of martial training. The text records that even as a young student of arms he displayed exceptional boldness, a quality the epic regards as a core virtue of the warrior class. Like his brothers, he is associated with the period of intensive pre-war training connected with Bhishma, the grand-patriarch of the Kuru line, during which the sons of Dhrishtadyumna studied advanced weapons under conditions of ascetic discipline.

✦ Role in the Kurukshetra War and Death

Kshatranjaya fought in the Pandava army during the Kurukshetra war, operating as a chariot-warrior within the formations under his father's command. He fell in battle against Drona during the period of Drona's command of the Kaurava forces — the same period in which his brothers Kshatradharman and Kshatravarman also perished. The primary text does not distinguish the specific day or circumstances of his individual death beyond identifying Drona as the agent of it.
