About
Sunama — Daughter of Devaka, Wife of Vasudeva, and Mother of Vrikadeva and Gada
Sunama · Sunamnī · Sunasi · Sunamni
Sunama is one of the wives of Vasudeva, the Vrishni Yadava chieftain and father of Krishna, and one of the daughters of Devaka, a prince of the Yadava line whose daughters were all given in marriage to Vasudeva. She is named consistently in the Harivamsha across two separate chapters — Chapter 35, which lists Vasudeva's wives and their sons, and Chapter 37, which gives the family of Devaka. The Vishnu Purana's footnote apparatus also cites her among Vasudeva's wives under the form Sunamnī. Her sons by Vasudeva are named in the Harivamsha as Vrikadeva and Gada. She is a sister of Devaki, the mother of Krishna, and of the other daughters of Devaka who were married to Vasudeva. She has no independent narrative role in the primary texts beyond her genealogical position.
✦ The Name
The Sanskrit name Sunama is formed from the prefix su, meaning good, auspicious, or well, and nama, meaning name, yielding the sense "one of good name" or "the well-named one." The form Sunamnī is a feminised and inflected variant of the same compound. A further variant, Sunasi, appears in the Sanskrit text of Harivamsha 1.37.29 in some manuscript traditions. These represent orthographic and manuscript variation rather than distinct figures. No etymological comment on this name is offered in any primary source.
✦ Lineage
- Father: Devaka — a prince of the Yadava line, son of Ahuka and brother of Ugrasena; he had four sons and seven daughters, all of whom he gave in marriage to Vasudeva.
- Sisters (co-wives of Vasudeva): Devaki — the mother of Krishna and the most prominent of Devaka's daughters; Shantideva, Srideva, Devarakshita, Vrikadevi, and Upadevi — the other sisters named alongside Sunama in Harivamsha Chapter 37, all given to Vasudeva in marriage.
- Husband: Vasudeva, also known by the patronymic Anakadundubhi — son of Shurasena of the Vrishni branch of the Yadava clan, father of Krishna and Balarama.
- Son: Vrikadeva — named in the Harivamsha (1.35.10) as the first of the two sons Vasudeva begat on Sunama.
- Son: Gada — named in the Harivamsha (1.35.10) as the second of Vasudeva's sons by Sunama.
✦ Textual Variants and Inconsistencies
The Harivamsha is the primary source for Sunama's identity as a daughter of Devaka. Chapter 37 (1.37.29) lists her as the seventh daughter of Devaka — the others being Devaki, Shantideva, Srideva, Devarakshita, Vrikadevi, and Upadevi — all given to Vasudeva. The Sanskrit text of this verse renders her name as Sunasi in some readings, while Chapter 35 uses the form Sunamnī. These are variant manuscript forms of the same figure.
The Bhagavata Purana (9.24.21–23) gives a different list of Devaka's seven daughters married to Vasudeva: Shantideva, Upadeva, Shrideva, Devarakshita, Sahadeva, Devaki, and Dhritadeva. Sunama does not appear in this list, and Sahadeva and Dhritadeva appear in her place. This represents a genuine cross-Puranic discrepancy in the enumeration of Devaka's daughters. The Vishnu Purana's footnote apparatus cites Sunamnī among Vasudeva's wives from the Brahma Purana and Harivamsha lists without placing her among Devaka's daughters directly; the connection to Devaka is specific to Harivamsha Chapter 37.
The Vishnu Purana's own body text attributes sons named Upanidhi, Gada, and others to a wife named Bhadra — not Sunama. The attribution of Gada to two different mothers (Sunama in the Harivamsha, Bhadra in the Vishnu Purana) is a direct inconsistency between these two sources and should be noted at the node for Gada if that figure is profiled.
✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy
Sunama belongs by birth to the Yadava line through Devaka, who is the son of Ahuka and the brother of Ugrasena. Ugrasena is the father of Kamsa, the tyrannical king of Mathura whose death at the hands of Krishna is the central event of the Krishna cycle. Devaka's daughters, including Sunama, are therefore maternal aunts of Krishna by virtue of their shared father, since Devaki — a full sister of Sunama in the Harivamsha account — is Krishna's mother. Sunama's sons Vrikadeva and Gada are thus half-brothers of Krishna and Balarama through their common father Vasudeva. Neither Vrikadeva nor Gada is given any further narrative role in the primary texts beyond their listing as sons of Vasudeva.
