Vaishakhi — Wife of Vasudeva, Third in the Harivamsha Enumeration

Vaishakhi is named as one of the wives of Vasudeva, the Vrishni Yadava chieftain and father of Krishna, in the Harivamsha (Adi Parva, Chapter 35), where she is listed third among his fourteen wives. The Vishnu Purana records a wife of Vasudeva named Vaishali, through whom he had a son called Kaushika; the Vayu Purana and Brahmanda Purana confirm this son and his mother under the same name. Whether Vaishakhi of the Harivamsha wife-list and Vaishali of the Vishnu Purana and Vayu Purana are the same figure under variant names, or are distinct wives whose records have been conflated, is not resolvable from the primary sources as they survive. No parentage is recorded for Vaishakhi or Vaishali in any primary source. The Wisdomlib Puranic glossary also records the name Saivya as a variant for this wife in certain Puranic contexts. The figure has no independent narrative role in any text.

The name Vaishakhi is a feminine adjectival form derived from Vishakha, the name of a lunar asterism (nakshatra) associated with the month of Vaishakha (April–May). As a personal name it carries associations with that auspicious lunar mansion. The name Vaishali is a place-name as well as a personal name, derived from the ancient city of Vaishali in the Vajji confederacy; as a personal name it denotes a woman connected to or named after that city or its presiding deity. Saivya is a feminine patronymic or clan-name derived from Shibi or Shiva, denoting association with the Shibi or Saivya clan. No primary source offers etymology specific to this figure.

✦ Textual Variants and Inconsistencies

The Harivamsha wife-list (1.35.1–3) names Vaishakhi as the third of Vasudeva's fourteen wives, after Rohini and Madira, without assigning children to her in the subsequent passage that lists sons borne by seven of the noble wives. The Vishnu Purana (IV.15) names a wife called Vaishali — not Vaishakhi — as the mother of Kaushika, Vasudeva's one son by that wife. The Vayu Purana uses the same form, Vaishali. The Brahmanda Purana confirms Kaushika as a son of Vasudeva at the same reference point.

Three possibilities follow from this discrepancy. First, Vaishakhi and Vaishali may be variant names or scribal variants for the same wife, with Vaishali being the form preserved in the Vishnu Purana and Vayu Purana and Vaishakhi in the Harivamsha. Second, they may be two distinct wives, in which case Vaishakhi is a wife of Vasudeva for whom no child is recorded in the Harivamsha, and Vaishali is a separately identified wife recorded only in the Vishnu Purana family of texts. Third, the Harivamsha's failure to name children for Vaishakhi in its son-enumeration passage — which covers only seven of the fourteen wives — does not preclude her being the same figure as Vaishali; the seven noble wives enumerated may simply not include her. No primary source equates or distinguishes these two names explicitly, and the ambiguity must stand in the genealogical record.

The Wisdomlib Puranic glossary entry for Kaushika further records that this son of Vasudeva by Saivya (Vaishali) was adopted by his brother Vrika, and notes that one source describes him as born of a Vaishya wife. If this last detail is accurate, it would have implications for the social status of Vaishakhi/Vaishali within the household, but the source for this characterisation has not been independently verified in the primary texts consulted and should be treated with caution.

The Bhagavata Purana's list of Vasudeva's wives does not include a wife named Vaishakhi or Vaishali, representing a further cross-Puranic divergence in the enumeration of Vasudeva's household.

Vaishakhi enters the Yadava genealogy through her marriage to Vasudeva of the Vrishni line. If the identification of Vaishakhi with Vaishali is accepted, her son Kaushika is a half-brother of Krishna and Balarama through their common father Vasudeva. The note that Kaushika was adopted by his brother Vrika suggests a transfer of lineage within Vasudeva's sons, though neither Kaushika nor Vrika is given any further genealogical or narrative record in the primary sources consulted.
