Sudhira is a son of Shibi Ausinara and a prince of the Anu lineage within the Chandravamsha, the Lunar dynasty. He appears in the genealogical list of Shibi's sons in the Bhagavata Purana (9.23.3–4) under the name Sudhira, and in the Harivamsa (I.31.29) under the name Suvira — a genuine name variant across primary sources. He is the eponymous progenitor of the Sauvira kingdom, one of the north-western janapadas of ancient India, located adjacent to the Sindhu and Sivi territories in the Punjab region. The Sauvira people — called Sauviras after him — appear repeatedly in the Mahabharata as a distinct political and ethnic group in the north-west, and the Sauvira kingdom features as a recognisable entity in both the Vishnu Purana and the Mahabharata's geographical and political references.

The Bhagavata Purana's name Sudhira is a compound of su (good, excellent) and dhira (steady, firm, resolute, or wise), meaning one of steadfast mind or excellent composure — a quality valued in both the warrior and the sage traditions. The Harivamsa's name Suvira is a compound of su (good, excellent) and vira (hero, warrior, man of valour), meaning an excellent hero. These are two distinct Sanskrit names, not merely variant spellings. The derivative name Sauvira — applied to his kingdom and descendants — is formed from Suvira with the patronymic suffix, pointing to the Harivamsa's form as the one from which the territorial name directly derives. The Sauvira kingdom, lying between the Sindhu and Sivi territories in the north-west Punjab region, appears as a distinct political entity in the Mahabharata, where it is mentioned alongside the Sindhu kingdom and the Sivi janapada. The Vishnu Purana's Purana Index (as compiled in Wisdomlib) confirms that the Sauvira country was named after Suvira son of Shibi and notes the tradition that Vidura, the Kuru elder, visited this kingdom. In the Mahabharata, Jayadratha — the Kaurava ally and king of Sindhu — is also described as ruling over the Sauvira and Sivi territories, indicating that by the Mahabharata period these neighbouring kingdoms had come under a single ruler.

The divergence between the Bhagavata Purana's Sudhira and the Harivamsa's Suvira is a substantive name variant, not a scribal error. The kingdom's name — Sauvira — is clearly derived from the Suvira form, supporting the Harivamsa's reading as the tradition that gave the territorial name. The Bhagavata appears to preserve an alternative name for the same figure. Pargiter also renders this son's name as Suvira. The Wisdomlib Puranic Encyclopaedia entry on Shibi gives Bhadra, Suvira, Kekaya, and Vrsadarbha as the four sons, citing the Bhagavata's ninth Skandha — yet using Suvira rather than Sudhira, suggesting the Bhagavata tradition is itself not uniform across all editions and secondary compilations.
