About

Shanti — King of the Nila-Panchala Line, Son of Nila, Father of Sushanti

Shanti · Śānti · Shanti son of Nila

Shanti is a king of the Paurava-Panchala lineage, the son of Nila — who was born of Ajamidha's wife Nalini and is the progenitor of the northern Panchala sub-line — and the father of Sushanti. He is attested in the Vishnu Purana (Book IV, chapter 19) and in the Bhagavata Purana (Canto IX, chapter 21, verse 31), the latter naming him in the same verse that attests his son Sushanti. He is the first generation after Nila in the Nila sub-line and the second figure in the sequence leading from Ajamidha through the Nila line toward Haryyashva and the five Panchala princes. No independent narrative, theological association, or episode is attested for Shanti in any consulted primary source. His profile is accordingly brief.

✦ The Name

The name Shanti is Sanskrit for peace, calm, tranquillity, or the cessation of disturbance — one of the most widely used and deeply resonant words in the Sanskrit tradition, employed in Vedic ritual, Upanishadic philosophy, and devotional literature alike. The triple invocation Shanti, Shanti, Shanti at the close of Vedic recitations is among the most universally recognised formulas in the tradition. As a royal personal name it belongs to the class of auspicious epithets reflecting the ideal of the peaceful and dharmic ruler. The name is shared by multiple other figures in the tradition — most notably the Mahabharata figure Shantanu's older name and various sages — none of whom has any connection to the Panchala king treated here.
