Supriya — Second Wife of Karna in Secondary Tradition

Supriya · Second Wife of Karna

Supriya is named in secondary and popular tradition as the second wife of Karna, King of Anga. She does not appear in the critical edition of the Mahabharata, in any of the eighteen Mahapuranas, or in the Harivamsha. Her name is absent from all primary Sanskrit sources. She is identified in later secondary accounts as a woman of the Suta community and as a friend of Bhanumati, the wife of Duryodhana — a detail that would place her within the social circle of the Kaurava court. Beyond her name and this single social connection, no biographical detail, parentage, or genealogical information is attested in any primary text. Like Vrushali, her entry into the tradition appears to be a product of secondary and regional elaboration rather than ancient scriptural record.

✦ The Name

The name Supriya is a well-attested Sanskrit feminine name meaning beloved, very dear, or one who is greatly loved — a compound of su (well, very, good) and priya (beloved, dear). It is a name found across multiple figures in the Puranic tradition and carries no dynasty-specific or unique connotation that would link it to the Anga royal house.

✦ Primary Source Status

Supriya has no attestation in any primary source. The Mahabharata confirms that Karna had more than one wife, both chosen from the Suta community by Adhiratha, but provides no names. The assignment of the name Supriya to the second of these unnamed wives, and the specific detail of her friendship with Bhanumati, are found only in secondary and popular accounts. In a genealogical database grounded in primary textual sources, Supriya should be recorded as a secondary-tradition name for one of Karna's unnamed wives without any further biographical or genealogical claims attached to her.
