About
Para II, Prithu, and Sukriti — Three Consecutive Kings of the Kampilya Line
Group profile: Para son of Samara · Prithu son of Para · Sukriti son of Prithu
This group profile covers three consecutive kings of the Kampilya line within the Brihadishu sub-branch of the Panchala genealogy: Para (the second figure of this name in the sub-line, here designated Para II to distinguish him from Para I who was the father of Nipa), Prithu, and Sukriti. All three form an unbroken linear sequence descending from Samara — the first named ruler of Kampilya, himself the principal son of Nipa — and leading to Vibhratra, the next figure warranting a grouped profile. All three are attested solely in the Vishnu Purana (Book IV, chapter 19) as the primary source. The Bhagavata Purana bypasses this entire stretch — having compressed all generations between Nipa and Brahmadatta into a single step — and so provides no variant names for any of the three. No parallel text introduces competing names for Para II, Prithu, or Sukriti specifically; the sole variant touching this group is the Vayu Purana's rendering of the following figure Vibhratra as Vibhraja, which falls at the boundary of the next profile rather than within this one. No independent narrative episode, theological association, or individual attestation beyond the genealogical list exists for any of the three in any primary source consulted. Their profiles are accordingly brief.
✦ Para II
Para II is the principal son of Samara — ruler of Kampilya — and the father of Prithu. He is named in the Vishnu Purana IV.19 as the first of Samara's three sons, the others being Sampara and Sadashrva. The continuing royal line of Kampilya passes exclusively through Para II; his brothers Sampara and Sadashrva head collateral branches for which no descendants are named in any consulted source. Para II must be carefully distinguished from Para I — the son of Prithusena and the father of Nipa — who appears earlier in the same sub-line. Both figures bear the same name and the designations Para I and Para II are essential for clarity in this genealogical tree.
Name:
The name Para is Sanskrit for supreme, highest, or the further shore — one of the most philosophically resonant terms in the Sanskrit tradition, used across Vedic, Upanishadic, and Puranic literature to denote the transcendent or ultimate. As a personal royal name it belongs to a class of short, powerful epithets; its recurrence twice within the same sub-line reflects the common Puranic practice of reusing auspicious names across generations of the same dynasty.
- Father: Samara — principal son of Nipa, first named ruler of Kampilya, father of Para II, Sampara, and Sadashrva
- Brothers: Sampara and Sadashrva — sons of Samara; collateral branches with no named descendants in any consulted source
- Son: Prithu — next king in the sequence
✦ Prithu
Prithu is the son of Para II and the father of Sukriti. He is named at Vishnu Purana IV.19 as the sole link between Para II and Sukriti in this sequence. No variant name is recorded in any parallel text and no narrative is attested in any source. This Kampilya Prithu must be carefully distinguished from the celebrated cosmic king Prithu — son of Vena, the first true king of the earth in the Puranic tradition, whose extensive narrative includes the milking of the earth goddess, the establishment of agriculture, and his identification as a partial avatara of Vishnu — with whom he shares only a name. No connection of any kind between the Kampilya Prithu and the cosmic king Prithu is stated or implied in any primary source.
Name:
The name Prithu is Sanskrit for broad, wide, or great — derived from the root prith, to be wide or to spread. It is among the most auspicious royal names in the Kshatriya tradition, directly associated with the celebrated cosmic king Prithu son of Vena who shaped the earth and whose name in some derivations is connected to the Sanskrit word for earth, prithvi. As noted, the Kampilya king of this name has no narrative connection to that figure beyond the shared name.
- Father: Para II — principal son of Samara ruler of Kampilya
- Son: Sukriti — next king in the sequence
✦ Sukriti
Sukriti is the son of Prithu and the father of Vibhratra. He is named at Vishnu Purana IV.19 as the link between Prithu and Vibhratra. The Wilson index at page 452 confirms Vibhraja — the Vayu Purana variant name for Vibhratra — as the son of Sukriti, establishing that this variant falls at Vibhratra's node rather than at Sukriti's own. No variant name for Sukriti himself is recorded in any parallel text. No narrative is attested in any source. Sukriti is the last of the three figures in this group; the next node in the sequence, Vibhratra, is grouped with Anuha in the following profile.
Name:
The name Sukriti is a Sanskrit compound of su — good, fine, or auspicious — and kriti — deed, action, or creation — yielding the sense of one of good deeds or the performer of auspicious acts. It is a name of strongly positive moral and religious resonance, celebrating virtue through action — particularly appropriate for a Kshatriya in whom dharmic royal conduct is the expected ideal.
- Father: Prithu — son of Para II son of Samara ruler of Kampilya
- Son: Vibhratra — next figure in the sequence, grouped with Anuha in the following profile; the Vayu Purana gives his name as Vibhraja
✦ Textual Variants
The three figures in this group share the same textual characteristic noted for Ruchirashva, Prithusena, and Para I earlier in this sub-line: they are among the most variant-free names in the entire Panchala genealogical sequence. The Vishnu Purana IV.19 gives the sequence Para → Prithu → Sukriti → Vibhratra without alternative readings for any of these three positions in Wilson's footnote 33. The Bhagavata Purana provides no alternative names simply because it bypasses this entire stretch in its compressed account moving directly from Nipa to Brahmadatta. The Matsya Purana and Harivamsha do not independently name these three figures. The only variant touching this group is the Vayu Purana's rendering of the following figure Vibhratra as Vibhraja — confirmed in the Wilson index entry — which is a variant for the next profile's subject rather than for any of the three treated here.
