Achala was a prince of Gandhara, son of King Subala and brother of Shakuni and Gandhari. He is described in the Mahabharata as one of the two most prominent of Shakuni's brothers — alongside Vrishaka — and fought on the Kaurava side in the Kurukshetra War. He was killed by Arjuna in the Shalya Parva on the eighteenth day of the war. His attestation is confined to the Mahabharata, specifically the Bhishma Parva and the Shalya Parva.

The name Achala derives from the Sanskrit a (not) and chala (moving, trembling), yielding the meaning immovable or steadfast — a name of martial honour connoting unwavering resolve in battle. It is a name shared with several other figures in the Puranic and epic tradition, including a mountain and a son of Vasudeva, and care must be taken not to conflate this Gandhara prince with those other bearers of the same name.

✦ Role in the Kurukshetra War and Death
The Mahabharata describes Achala and Vrishaka together as brave warriors who fought without retreat throughout the war on the Kaurava side. The Udyoga Parva records Bhishma classifying both Achala and Vrishaka as Rathas — competent chariot warriors — in his assessment of the Kaurava forces before the battle began. In the Shalya Parva, during the fighting on the eighteenth day, both brothers were slain by Arjuna. When Shakuni witnessed their deaths, he responded by unleashing powerful battlefield illusions against Arjuna and Krishna in grief and fury. The Shalya Parva records Krishna's address to Arjuna reminding him that Achala and Vrishaka had been killed for his sake, confirming their deaths as a direct consequence of their loyalty to the Kaurava cause.
