About

Kshatravriddha — Son of Ayus, Progenitor of the Kashi Royal Line

Kshatravriddha is one of the five sons of Ayus, king of the Chandravamsha (Lunar dynasty) and son of Pururavas and the apsara Urvashi. His brothers are Nahusha, who succeeded Ayus and later occupied Indra's throne for a time, and Raji, Rambha (also given as Rabha), and Anenas. While the main royal succession continued through Nahusha's line, Kshatravriddha's own descendants became, within a few generations, the founding house of the kings of Kashi, a line that would eventually produce Dhanvantari, held to be an incarnation of Vishnu, and King Divodasa. He is named in the genealogical lists of Ayus's descendants given in the Vishnu Purana, the Bhagavata Purana, and the Harivamsha.

✦ The Name

Kshatravriddha combines kshatra, "dominion" or "warrior power," with vriddha, "grown" or "increased," giving the sense "one whose royal power has grown" or "increaser of the warrior order."

✦ Lineage

  • Father: Ayus, king of the Lunar dynasty, son of Pururavas and the apsara Urvashi.
  • Brothers: Nahusha, who succeeded Ayus and continued the main dynastic line; Raji; Rambha (also given as Rabha); and Anenas.
  • Son: Suhotra (given as Sunahotra in the Harivamsha), who continued the Kashi-line succession.

✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy

Kshatravriddha represents a junior branch of Ayus's descendants, set apart from the senior line carried by Nahusha, from which the Puru-Bharata dynasty and, eventually, the Pandavas and Kauravas descend. Through his son Suhotra, his own branch runs instead toward the kingdom of Kashi, centered on the city later called Varanasi or Banaras, carrying the line down through Suhotra, Kasya, Kasi, Rashtra, Dirghatamas, Dhanvantari, Ketumat, and Bhimaratha to King Divodasa.
