About
Bhimaratha — Son of Ketumat, Father of Divodasa
Bhimaratha is recorded as the son of Ketumat and the father of King Divodasa of Kashi in the standard genealogical sequence given by the Vishnu Purana, the Bhagavata Purana, and the Harivamsha. A separate line of interpretation, however, noted by the translator H. H. Wilson with reference to a further Puranic authority he does not name outright, holds that "Bhimaratha" is not a distinct ancestor at all but an epithet applied directly to Divodasa himself, paired with a second epithet, Ashtaratha, applied in that same reading to Divodasa's own son Pratardana. This profile follows the standard genealogical sequence, in which Bhimaratha is Ketumat's son and Divodasa's father, while recording the alternative reading as a documented variant.
✦ The Name
Bhimaratha combines bhima, "formidable" or "terrible," with ratha, "chariot," giving the sense "one of a formidable chariot" or "terrible charioteer."
✦ Lineage
- Father: Ketumat, son of Dhanvantari in the Kashi royal line.
- Son: Divodasa, later king of Kashi, remembered in the Puranas for relocating his capital to the bank of the Gomati river after the rakshasa Kshemaka depopulated Varanasi and the rakshasa Nikumbha cursed the city to remain uninhabited for a thousand years, and for later reconquering Varanasi itself from Bhadrasenya, a king of the Yadu lineage, by defeating his hundred sons in battle.
✦ Textual Variants
H. H. Wilson's footnote to the Vishnu Purana's Kashi genealogy cites a passage describing a king called Ashtaratha as the son of Bhimaratha, a warrior who recovers a kingdom taken from infant heirs. Wilson states that in this parallel account, Bhimaratha and Ashtaratha are to be understood as alternate names, or epithets, for Divodasa and his son Pratardana respectively, rather than as the separate generations of Ketumat's son and Divodasa's own father found in the main line of the Vishnu Purana, Bhagavata Purana, and Harivamsha. The standard sequence followed by all three principal texts nonetheless keeps Bhimaratha and Divodasa as distinct, successive generations, and this profile follows that standard sequence while recording Wilson's alternative reading here rather than adopting it.
✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy
Bhimaratha, in the standard sequence, stands as the penultimate generation of the Kashi line traced from Ayus through Kshatravriddha, Suhotra, and Dhanvantari, immediately preceding Divodasa, whose own son Pratardana, also called Dyuman, Shatrujit, Vatsa, Ritadhvaja, and Kuvalayashva, continued the dynasty at Kashi.
