About

Sunaka — Son of Gritsamada, Father of Saunaka

Shunaka

Sunaka, also spelled Shunaka, is recorded in the Puranic dynastic genealogies as the son of the rishi Gritsamada and the father of Saunaka, the celebrated Vedic scholar and kulapati of Naimisharanya. Puranic genealogical digests describe him as "a twice-born one risen from Kshatriya lineage," marking him as the generation at which his family's Kshatriya ancestry, descending from Ayus through Kshatravriddha and Suhotra, is recognized as Brahmana. This placement stands in some tension with a separate Vedic tradition, recorded in the Rigveda's Anukramani index and Sayana's commentary, in which a sage named Sunaka of the Bhrigu lineage instead adopts Gritsamada as his own son, making Sunaka Gritsamada's adoptive father rather than his biological son. He is named in the Vishnu Purana, the Bhagavata Purana, and the Harivamsha.

✦ Lineage

  • Father: Gritsamada, rishi of the Rigveda's second Mandala, son of Suhotra.
  • Son: Saunaka, kulapati of Naimisharanya and author of the Brihaddevata and related Vedic scholarly works.

✦ Textual Variants

The Puranic dynastic account, followed by the Bhagavata Purana and the Harivamsha, places Sunaka as Gritsamada's biological son and Saunaka's father, a full generation later than Gritsamada. The Vedic tradition preserved in the Rigveda's Anukramani and Sayana's commentary instead makes a sage named Sunaka the adoptive father of Gritsamada himself, a generation earlier rather than later, with Gritsamada afterward called Saunaka Bhargava as a result of that adoption. These two placements of the name Sunaka relative to Gritsamada cannot be reconciled into a single sequence and are recorded here as they stand in their respective sources. The Vishnu Purana, for its part, omits a separate Sunaka generation altogether, naming only a single figure, Saunaka, as Gritsamada's son and crediting him directly with establishing the fourfold distinctions of caste.

✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy

Through Gritsamada, Sunaka's ancestry runs back to Suhotra, Kshatravriddha, and Ayus of the Lunar dynasty. Through his son Saunaka, he stands at the head of the Saunaka gotra and shakha tradition of Vedic scholarship. The Harivamsha states that Sunaka's descendants, known collectively as the Saunakas, came to include members of all four varnas, Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra, a distinctive claim not repeated in the Vishnu Purana's shorter, single-generation account of this segment of the lineage.
