About
Suhotra — Son of Sahadeva and Vijaya
Suhotra
Suhotra is the son of Sahadeva — youngest of the five Pandava brothers — and Vijaya, a princess of the Madra kingdom and daughter of its king Dyutimat. He is recorded in the Mahabharata's Adi Parva and in the Bhagavata Purana's genealogical account of the Pandava line. Like Niramitra, the son of his father's twin Nakula, Suhotra belongs to the generation of Pandava sons born through the secondary individual wives rather than through Draupadi. The primary texts record his birth and parentage, and the tradition associates him with the continuation of Sahadeva's line in the Madra kingdom after the Kurukshetra War, but the primary sources provide no extended narrative of his life or deeds.
✦ The Name
Suhotra is a Sanskrit compound from su, meaning good or well, and hotra, relating to the sacrificial oblation or the act of offering into fire. The name therefore carries the sense of one associated with excellent sacrifice or auspicious ritual offerings. It is an honourable Kshatriya name in the tradition, borne by several entirely distinct figures in the Puranic and epic corpus.
✦ Lineage
- Father: Sahadeva — youngest of the five Pandava brothers; son of King Pandu and Madri, his divine parentage attributed to the twin physician-gods the Ashvins; celebrated throughout the Mahabharata for his wisdom, astrological knowledge, and mastery of the sword; appointed king of Southern Madra after the Kurukshetra War by his eldest brother Yudhishthira.
- Mother: Vijaya — princess of the Madra kingdom, daughter of Dyutimat, king of Madra; she chose Sahadeva at a self-choice ceremony organised by her father; Sahadeva's own mother Madri was also a Madra princess, making Vijaya a member of Sahadeva's maternal kingdom.
- Paternal grandmother: Madri — second wife of Pandu; daughter of the Madra royal line and sister of King Shalya of Madra; she died by self-immolation on Pandu's funeral pyre.
- Paternal grandfather: Pandu — king of Hastinapura of the Kuru dynasty; son of Vichitravirya through Vyasa's union with Ambalika.
- Half-brother: Shrutasena — born to Sahadeva by Draupadi; one of the five Upapandavas killed in the night-raid of Ashvatthama following the final day of the Kurukshetra War.
- Maternal great-uncle (probable): Shalya — king of Madra; Sahadeva's maternal uncle through Madri; fought on the Kaurava side in the Kurukshetra War despite his ties to the Pandavas and was killed by Yudhishthira on the final day of battle.
✦ Textual Record and Its Limits
Suhotra's textual record is as sparse as that of Niramitra. His existence is established in a single verse of the Mahabharata's Adi Parva recording his birth to Sahadeva and Vijaya, and the entry is corroborated by the Bhagavata Purana's genealogical chapter on the Pandava descendants. Neither the Mahabharata's main narrative nor any identified Puranic passage records individual deeds, speeches, or episodes associated with this Suhotra. The tradition records that after the Kurukshetra War Sahadeva was appointed king of Southern Madra, and that Suhotra subsequently became heir to that kingdom, but no primary verse has been identified that names the precise succession mechanism or describes Suhotra's reign.
✦ Disambiguation
The name Suhotra is shared by several entirely unrelated figures in the Puranic and epic corpus. The Bhagavata Purana records a Suhotra who is the son of Kshatravrdha and grandson of Ayu, ancestor of the Kashi royal line, mentioned in Book 9, Chapter 17. A second Puranic Suhotra is the son of Sudhanu, one of the four sons of King Kuru of Kurukshetra, and himself a figure in the Kuru genealogy at a period far earlier than the Pandavas, recorded in Bhagavata Purana 9.22.4–5. A third Suhotra is a son of the sage Jamadagni and thus a brother of Parashurama, recorded in the Brahmanda Purana. A fourth is a son of the legendary emperor Bharata. None of these figures are related to Sahadeva's son by Vijaya, who is a separate entry in the same Bhagavata Purana passage at 9.22.30–31.
✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy
Suhotra stands at the intersection of the Kuru dynasty of the Lunar lineage — through his father Sahadeva — and the Madra royal family — through his mother Vijaya. His paternal line traces from Vaivasvata Manu through the Lunar lineage by the Puru branch to Bharata, Kuru, Shantanu, Vichitravirya, Pandu, and Sahadeva. His maternal line runs through the Madra kingdom, a ruling house of the north-western territories. The twin brothers Nakula and Sahadeva were installed as kings of the northern and southern divisions of Madra respectively after the Kurukshetra War; Suhotra's association with Southern Madra after Sahadeva's death represents the continuation of this post-war Pandava presence in that territory. His half-brother Shrutasena, son of Sahadeva by Draupadi, was killed before him in Ashvatthama's night-raid, leaving Suhotra as the surviving son through whom Sahadeva's line continued.
