Madravati — Queen of Parikshit, Mother of Janamejaya
Madravati · Mādravatī · Parikshit-patni · Janamejaya-mata · Shrutasena-mata · Ugrasena-mata · Bhimasena-mata
Madravati is the queen of Parikshit — the last Kuru king of the Kurukshetra War generation, posthumous son of Abhimanyu and Uttara — and the mother of four sons: Janamejaya (the eldest, who succeeded Parikshit and performed the Sarpa Satra), Shrutasena, Ugrasena, and Bhimasena. She is named in the Mahabharata's Adi Parva (Chapter 95, Verse 85) as Parikshit's wife and Janamejaya's mother, and confirmed in the Puranic Encyclopaedia of Vettam Mani which cites the same primary source. Her parentage, personal history, and all other biographical details are not recorded in any primary canonical source available. The Bhagavata Purana (1.16.2) records a different name for Janamejaya's mother — Iravati, daughter of Uttara — creating a direct inconsistency with the Mahabharata's Madravati. The two names cannot be reconciled from the available primary evidence and both are recorded here for accuracy.
✦ The Name
The Sanskrit name Madravati — written Mādravatī — means she who belongs to Madra, the one from the Madra region. It is a place-name derivative indicating origin from the Madra kingdom — the ancient kingdom of the north-western Punjab, whose most celebrated princess in the tradition was Madri, the second wife of Pandu and the mother of the twin Pandavas Nakula and Sahadeva. The Wisdomlib source explicitly notes that Madravati is recorded in the Mahabharata as an alternate name for Madri — Pandu's wife — (Sabha Parva, Chapter 52, Verse 56) and confirms separately that Madravati as wife of Parikshit is a distinct figure recorded in Adi Parva, Chapter 95. Whether the two Madravatis — Pandu's wife and Parikshit's wife — share the name because the later woman also came from the Madra kingdom, or because the genealogical tradition associated Parikshit's queen with that lineage through marriage alliance, the primary sources do not explain.
✦ Lineage
- Parentage: not recorded in any primary canonical source
- Husband: Parikshit — the posthumous son of Abhimanyu (son of Arjuna) and Uttara (daughter of King Virata of Matsya); who was revived in his mother's womb after Ashvatthama's Brahmastra struck him; who succeeded Yudhishthira on the throne of Hastinapura; who was cursed by the sage Shringi to die from a serpent's bite within seven days; who spent his final seven days on the Ganga's banks hearing the Bhagavata Purana from the sage Shuka and attained liberation
- Sons: Janamejaya — the eldest; who succeeded Parikshit as king; who performed the Sarpa Satra to destroy the serpent race in revenge for his father's death from Takshaka's bite; at whose sacrifice the entire Mahabharata was first narrated by Vaishampayana; Shrutasena, Ugrasena, and Bhimasena — the three younger sons; all confirmed in the Vishnu Purana (Book 4, Chapter 21), the Bhagavata Purana (Canto 9, Chapter 22), and the Shatapatha Brahmana (Khanda 8, Adhyaya 5, Brahmana 4 — which uses the collective designation Parikshitiyas for the four sons)
- Textual inconsistency — Iravati: the Bhagavata Purana (1.16.2) names Janamejaya's mother as Iravati, daughter of Uttara, rather than Madravati; this is a direct inconsistency between the Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana that cannot be resolved from the available primary evidence; some scholars have suggested the two texts refer to two different wives of Parikshit, with Janamejaya born of one and the other three sons born of the other — but no primary text explicitly supports this resolution
