King Govasana — also recorded as Govasena — was the ruler of the Sivi kingdom, belonging to the Shaivya tribe. He is the father of Devika, who became the second wife of Yudhishthira, and the maternal grandfather of Yaudheya. He fought in the Kurukshetra war. After his death in the war, his grandson Yaudheya succeeded him as king of the Sivi realm.

Govasana derives from go — cattle, the sacred symbol of prosperity and dharmic wealth — and vasana — dwelling, abode, or one who possesses. Together: he in whose domain cattle dwell abundantly, or lord of prosperous herds — a name befitting a ruler of an agricultural and pastoral kingdom. The epithet Shaivya denotes his tribal identity as a member of the Shaivya clan, the ruling lineage of the Sivi kingdom.

The Sivi kingdom — also called Sibi or Shibi — was a realm of distinguished heritage in the epic's political geography. Its founding king, Shivi, was celebrated across the tradition for his extraordinary compassion and truthfulness: he is said to have given flesh from his own body to protect a dove from a hawk, a story that became one of the most renowned parables of kingly self-sacrifice in the entire Puranic tradition. To rule this kingdom was to inherit the legacy of that absolute moral standard.

Govasana arranged a svayamvara for his daughter Devika — granting her the right of self-choice in her marriage. At this ceremony, Devika chose Yudhishthira as her husband. The Adi Parva records this as a self-choice ceremony, and Govasana is described as affectionate towards Yudhishthira in the traditions that remember this connection.
✦ The Kurukshetra War — Side and Fate
The Mahabharata records that King Shaivya of the Govasana clan fought on the Kaurava side at Kurukshetra — a detail the text itself notes as remarkable given that Yudhishthira had married a woman of this very clan. The AncientVoice analysis of the Bhishma Parva records him going out on a princely elephant with a banner, in the company of other kings joining the Kaurava army. He is mentioned again in the Drona Parva engaging in battle. He died in the course of the war. After his death, his grandson Yaudheya inherited the Sivi kingdom.
The tradition also records a separate Sivi king fighting on the Pandava side — likely a different branch of the Sivi royal family, possibly a descendant of the original Shivi lineage. The two Sivi factions at Kurukshetra — one under Govasana on the Kaurava side, one on the Pandava side — reflect the fragmented political reality of the war, in which even closely related kingdoms and clans were divided between the two armies.
