About

Sauvali — Vaishya Attendant of Dhritarashtra, Mother of Yuyutsu

Sauvali · Sughada · Sukhada · the Vaishya woman

Sauvali is the mother of Yuyutsu — the son of Dhritarashtra who defected from the Kaurava side to fight with the Pandavas at Kurukshetra and who was the only son of Dhritarashtra to survive the war. She is described in the Mahabharata (Adi Parva, chapter 116) as a woman of the Vaishya varna who served as a maid attendant in the royal household of Hastinapura, attending personally on Dhritarashtra during the period when his principal wife Gandhari's pregnancy had extended beyond the expected term without issue. Dhritarashtra, anxious for an heir, begot Yuyutsu upon her during that time. The Mahabharata's primary text does not name her — she is referred to throughout solely as a Vaishya woman or maid servant. The name Sauvali is recorded in secondary and derivative sources including the Geni genealogical database, while other secondary sources give the variants Sughada and Sukhada for the same figure. None of these names can be traced to a specific chapter and verse in the Mahabharata, the Vishnu Purana, the Bhagavata Purana, or the Harivamsha in the sources consulted; they represent a post-primary naming tradition. The profile is accordingly brief and honest about the limited primary textual base.

✦ The Name

The name Sauvali does not appear in the primary Mahabharata text and its etymology therefore cannot be confirmed against a source. The variant Sukhada means giver of happiness or she who gives pleasure, from sukha — ease, happiness — and da, the giving suffix. The variant Sughada is similarly constructed, meaning she of good giving or the auspicious giver, from su — good — and ghada or da — giving. Both variants are semantically consistent with the role of an attendant or concubine in the Kshatriya royal household context. The form Sauvali may derive from the root savala, meaning variegated or mixed, which would carry a connotation of mixed social standing, but this is speculative in the absence of a primary text citation for the name.

✦ Lineage

  • Varna: Vaishya — the third of the four varnas, associated with agriculture, trade, and commerce; the Mahabharata's primary text is explicit on this point, making Yuyutsu's mixed Kshatriya-Vaishya parentage a recurring source of social commentary within the epic's narrative
  • Role: A maid attendant in the royal household of Hastinapura, described as personally attending on Dhritarashtra during Gandhari's extended pregnancy
  • Partner: Dhritarashtra — blind king of Hastinapura, son of Vichitravirya and Ambika through the niyoga of Vyasa; father of the hundred Kauravas by Gandhari and of Yuyutsu by Sauvali
  • Son: Yuyutsu — son of Dhritarashtra by Sauvali; born around the same time as Duryodhana but younger than him and older than the remaining ninety-nine Kaurava brothers; a warrior of great integrity who defected from the Kaurava side to the Pandavas on the eve of the Kurukshetra War; the only son of Dhritarashtra to survive the conflict; appointed by Yudhishthira to govern Hastinapura after the war

✦ Textual Variants

The Mahabharata Adi Parva (chapter 116) describes the mother of Yuyutsu as a Vaishya maid attendant without any personal name. The Adi Parva chapter 115 passage similarly refers to her only by social designation. The name Sauvali appears in secondary genealogical compilations and is the most widely used form in derivative literature. The form Sukhada is used in certain secondary sources including VedicFeed and several devotional genealogical websites. The form Sughada appears in yet others. None of these names is traceable to a specific Puranic chapter and verse in the primary sources accessible through the scholarly apparatus. Wilson's footnotes to the relevant Vishnu Purana genealogical passage do not record a name for this figure. The Harivamsha's treatment of the Dhritarashtra genealogy does not appear to name her either in the sources consulted. The name used in your tree — Sauvali — is adopted here as the most consistently used secondary-source designation for this figure, with the explicit acknowledgement that it is not confirmed in any primary text.

Primary Sources

  • Mahabharata, Adi Parva, chapters 115–116 — The principal primary source; describes the mother of Yuyutsu as a maid servant of the Vaishya class who attended on Dhritarashtra during Gandhari's extended pregnancy; states that Dhritarashtra begot upon her a son of great intelligence afterwards named Yuyutsu; does not name her.

Secondary Sources

  • Geni.com genealogical database, "Yuyutsu" entry — Uses the name Sauvali for Yuyutsu's mother; cites the Mahabharata as source without giving a specific verse reference for the name.
  • Wikipedia, "Yuyutsu" article — Refers to the mother as a Vaishya servant; does not provide a personal name in the main text, consistent with the primary source's anonymity.
  • Sacred-texts.com, Mahabharata Adi Parva, sections 116–117 — Reproduces the primary text passage identifying the mother only as a Vaishya maid attendant; confirms the absence of a personal name in the Ganguli translation of the critical text.
