About
Gandaki — Nagakanya, Fifth Daughter of Vasuki and Shatashirsha
Gandaki · Nagakanya Gandaki · Mata of the Gaur
Gandaki is a Nagakanya recorded in the Chitragupta Purana and associated Vanshavali tradition as the fifth daughter of Vasuki, the Naga king, and his consort Shatashirsha. She was given in marriage to Sucharu, the fifth son of Chitragupta, and through this union became the founding maternal ancestress of the Gaur clan of the Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha community. Like Narmada among her sisters, Gandaki shares her name with a major sacred river of the Indian subcontinent.
✦ The Name
Gandaki is the name of the Gandaki River — known also as the Narayani or the Kali Gandaki — which rises in the Mustang region of Nepal and flows southward through Nepal and Bihar before joining the Ganga near Hajipur. The river is one of the most sacred in the Vaishnava tradition: the Skanda Purana and other Puranic sources record that the Shaligrama stones — naturally formed ammonite fossils found in the Gandaki riverbed and regarded as self-manifested forms of the god Vishnu — come from this river. The river's name in Sanskrit is connected to the word gandha, meaning scent or fragrance, or alternatively to a root associated with the flow and movement of water. The Gandaki is specifically identified in Puranic tradition as a goddess in river form, and the Shaligrama association gives it a direct Vaishnava sacred character. As a name for the fifth Nagakanya, Gandaki continues the pattern — also seen in her sister Narmada — of naming the daughters of this Naga lineage after the great sacred rivers of northern India.
