Dushana is a Rakshasa warrior named in the Valmiki Ramayana as the twin brother of Khara and one of the three commanders of the Rakshasa garrison at Janasthana in the Dandaka forest. He is the son of the sage Vishrava by Raka, a Rakshasi given to Vishrava by Kubera. Through his father Vishrava, Dushana is the half-brother of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, Vibhishana, and Surpanakha, all born of Vishrava's other wife Kaikesi, and also the half-brother of Kubera, born of Vishrava's first wife Ilavida. Dushana served as a senior military commander alongside his brother Khara and their associate Trishiras in Ravana's mainland garrison, which was responsible for maintaining Rakshasa control over the Dandaka forest region. He was killed by Rama during the battle of Janasthana, the same engagement in which Khara and Trishiras also fell. This is a significant divergence from the Valmiki Ramayana and Uttara Ramayana tradition, where Dushana is consistently presented as a brother of Khara and therefore a son of Vishrava. The Puranic Encyclopaedia's entry on Khara, drawing on the Mahabharata's Vana Parva account, names Khara specifically as the son of Vishrava by Raka but does not name Dushana as a co-child of this union in the same passage, naming only Khara and Surpanakha as twins of Raka.
