Praheti — First-Born of Brahma's Creative Anger, Brother of Heti

Praheti was born at the beginning of the Kritayuga alongside his brother Heti — both emanating from Brahma's face during a moment of hunger and irritation, as Brahma was reciting the Vedas. Together they represent the first beings of the Rakshasa and Yaksha orders. The two are described across all primary sources as having become mighty and powerful like Madhu and Kaitabha.

The name Praheti is formed with the prefix pra — forward, forth, intensified — added to heti — missile, weapon, ray of light. Together: the foremost weapon or the intensified missile. The Vājasaneyī-saṃhitā records the word praheti as meaning a missile or weapon in an older Vedic context. As a name it declares a being of primary destructive force — the first and most intensified manifestation of the principle his brother Heti embodies.
✦ The Textual Contradiction — Rakshasa or Yaksha
The primary sources present a direct contradiction on which of the two brothers — Heti or Praheti — was the Rakshasa and which the Yaksha. The Puranic Encyclopaedia (Vettam Mani) records that Praheti became the father of the Rakshasas and Heti the father of the Yakshas — with Praheti as the evil one who married and propagated the Rakshasa line, and Heti as the one who remained celibate, performed penance in the Himalayas, and attained moksha. The Tamil Brahmins Community forum drawing from the same Puranic Encyclopaedia and the Uttaramayana gives the reverse — Praheti and Heti as the first born Rakshasas, with Heti marrying Bhaya and fathering Vidyutkesa. Both accounts agree that one brother was evil and the other virtuous, and that one married and one did not — but they disagree on which was which. This profile presents both versions without resolving the contradiction, as the primary source itself is divided on the matter.

The Wisdomlib Puranic Encyclopaedia records several additional appearances of a figure named Praheti across different Puranic contexts — some of which may refer to different beings of the same name rather than the first-born Rakshasa. These include: a partisan of Vrita who took part in the Devasura war between Bali and Indra and fought with Mitra (Bhagavata Purana); the Rakshasa presiding over the month of Madhava; a son of Yatudhana and father of Malyavan and others; a Rakshasa on the Vaidyuta hill; a presence with the sun in the spring; and a father of Puloma. These varied appearances suggest that the name Praheti was applied to more than one figure across the tradition, or that the original first-born Praheti was attributed with a more extensive narrative across different Puranic strata.

The Wisdomlib entry notes that in the Mahayana Buddhist text the Mahavastu, Praheti is recorded as the name of a Buddha under whom Shakyamuni — the historical Buddha — acquired merit along the first through ninth bhūmis. This usage is entirely separate from the Hindu Puranic figure and reflects the adoption and transformation of Puranic names within the Buddhist tradition.
