Dharmavati is the wife of Dharmadeva — the divine personification of cosmic righteousness, a mind-born son of Brahma — and the mother of Dharmavrata, the ascetic daughter who was married to Marichi and later cursed to stone, becoming the sacred household object known as the Devashila. She is recorded in the Puranic Encyclopaedia (Vettam Mani) in a single unambiguous passage: Dharmadeva got a daughter named Dharmavrata of his wife Dharmavati. This is the entirety of what the primary tradition records about her.

The Sanskrit name Dharmavati is formed from dharma — cosmic law, righteousness, duty — and the feminine suffix vati — she who possesses. Together: she who possesses dharma or she who is endowed with righteousness. It is both a name and a designation — one given to a woman understood to embody the qualities of her husband's divine essence. Her name in Kannada classical music denotes the 59th of the 72 main melodic modes (melas) of the Karnatik system — a usage entirely separate from the Puranic figure but reflecting the same quality of dharmic harmony the name carries. She is not to be confused with Dharmavatī — the wife of the Brahmin Viravara — who appears in the Kathasaritsagara (Chapter 53 and Chapter 78) and is an entirely different figure from the epic and storytelling tradition.

Beyond her identification as the wife of Dharmadeva and the mother of Dharmavrata, no primary or secondary Puranic source records anything further about Dharmavati — her own origin, parentage, austerities, appearance, or fate. The Vayu Purana, which names Dharmavrata's mother as Vishvarupa rather than Dharmavati, represents the one alternate tradition; in that version Vishvarupa is Dharma's wife and Dharmavrata's mother. The Puranic Encyclopaedia (Vettam Mani) uses the name Dharmavati. Both names may refer to the same figure under different Puranic recensions, or to different wives of Dharmadeva altogether — the tradition does not resolve this.
