About
Paurnamasa — Son of Marichi and Sambhuti
Paurnamasa · Paurnamasya · Paurnamasi (in certain variant forms)
Paurnamasa is a figure in the Hindu Puranic tradition, identified in the Vishnu Purana as the son of Marichi — one of the seven great sages of the first Manvantara and a mind-born son of Brahma — and of Sambhuti, who is described in certain accounts as a daughter of Daksha Prajapati. The Vishnu Purana records that Paurnamasa was a Mahatma — a great-souled being — and that he fathered two sons, Virajas and Sarvaga. Additional details of his grandsons' lineages are recorded in the Linga Purana. Paurnamasa's textual base is narrower than that of his half-brother Kashyapa; his principal attestation is in the Vishnu Purana, Book 1, Chapter 10, with supplementary detail in the Linga and Vayu Puranas. The Puranic Encyclopaedia of Vettam Mani notes that Marichi's wife in this connection is named Sambhuri or Sambhuti and that she gave birth to Paurnamasa, while the Bhagavata Purana does not appear to contain an independent account of Paurnamasa equivalent in detail to the Vishnu Purana's treatment.
✦ The Name
The name Paurnamasa derives from the Sanskrit word paurnamasi or paurnamasa, meaning the full moon day or the fortnight of the full moon. The root is purna, meaning full or complete, combined with masa, meaning month, through the adjectival form paurna, yielding the sense of that which belongs to or is associated with the full moon. In Vedic ritual literature, paurnamasa is the name of a specific sacrificial rite performed on the full moon day — the Darshapurnamasa, consisting of two complementary rites performed at the new and full moon respectively — and the name thus carries strong associations with the sacrificial and ritual dimensions of Vedic religious practice. The thematic connection between the names Purniman and Paurnamasa — both sons of Marichi by different mothers, both deriving their names from the full moon — is noted above in the Purniman profile.
✦ Lineage
- Father: Marichi — one of the ten mind-born sons of Brahma; one of the seven great sages of the first Manvantara; a Prajapati whose elder son Kashyapa is the ancestral progenitor of all created beings.
- Mother: Sambhuti — described in the Puranic Encyclopaedia and in secondary sources as a wife of Marichi, and in certain accounts as a daughter of Daksha Prajapati. The Manidvipa source notes that Marichi married Kala, Sambhuti, and Dharmavrata, and that Sambhuti was a daughter of Daksha. This parentage places Sambhuti among the daughters of Daksha and Prasuti, though the specific identification of which of Daksha's daughters she is requires caution as lists vary across texts.
- Half-brothers: Kashyapa — the most prominent son of Marichi, born of Kala; ancestral progenitor of all created beings; and Purniman — born of Kala alongside Kashyapa; father of Virajas, Visvaga, and Devakulya.
- Son: Virajas — a son of Paurnamasa; the Linga Purana records that this Virajas married Gauri and produced Sudhaman, a Lokapala of the eastern quarter. It should be noted that a figure named Virajas also appears among the sons of Purniman, creating potential confusion between two cousins of the same name within the same generation of Marichi's descendants; the Vishnu Purana footnotes in Wilson's translation acknowledge this overlap.
- Son: Sarvaga — a son of Paurnamasa; also rendered Parvasa in certain manuscript traditions. The Linga Purana records that Sarvaga, through his wife Parvasi, produced two sons named Yajnavama and Kashyata, both described as founders of gotras.
✦ Description as Mahatma
The Vishnu Purana describes Paurnamasa as a Mahatma — a great-souled being — in its brief reference to him within the broader account of Marichi's lineage. This designation, while brief, signals that Paurnamasa was regarded within the tradition as a figure of spiritual distinction rather than merely a genealogical link between Marichi and his grandsons. The Vishnu Purana notes that a more particular account of Marichi's race will follow, suggesting that Paurnamasa's lineage was considered part of the fuller genealogical scheme of the text, even if the surviving account is brief. Beyond this description and the names of his sons, the primary sources do not record narratives, austerities, or other episodes specifically associated with Paurnamasa as an individual figure.
✦ Textual Variants and Inconsistencies
The principal textual inconsistency concerning Paurnamasa lies in the identity of his mother. The Puranic Encyclopaedia names the mother as Sambhuri or Sambhuti. The Manidvipa source and certain other secondary accounts identify Sambhuti as a daughter of Daksha. However, certain manuscript traditions of the Vishnu Purana render the mother's name differently, and the identification of Sambhuti specifically among Daksha's daughters is not entirely consistent across all primary sources. A further complexity arises from the overlap of the name Virajas between Paurnamasa's son and the son of his half-cousin Purniman. The Wilson translation of the Vishnu Purana footnote acknowledges this, noting that the name Parvasa in that passage may be read as equivalent to Sarvaga, and that the grandsons of Paurnamasa through his sons include figures whose names parallel those in the Purniman line. Whether these represent the same figures merged across traditions or genuinely distinct persons cannot be resolved from the primary texts as they stand.
✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy
Paurnamasa is a son of Marichi and a member of the second generation of Marichi's descendants. Through his sons Virajas and Sarvaga, and their offspring recorded in the Linga Purana, he is the ancestor of at least one Lokapala — a guardian of a cosmic quarter — and of the founders of two gotra lineages. His mother Sambhuti, if she is correctly identified as a daughter of Daksha, makes Paurnamasa also a grandson of Daksha Prajapati on his mother's side. His half-brothers through Kala are Kashyapa — one of the most significant progenitor figures in the entire Puranic tradition — and Purniman.
