About

Matiman — Fourth Son of Chitragupta and Iravati, Progenitor of the Saxena Kayastha Clan

Matiman · Matimaan · Matiman Chitragupta · Saxena Adi-Purush

Matiman is the fourth son of Chitragupta born of his second wife Iravati. He is the founding ancestor of the Saxena subdivision of the Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha community. The community tradition records Matiman as a figure of particular administrative and political distinction: he is associated in the Chitragupta Vamshaavali and related sources with service as a minister in the ancient kingdom of Gandhar — the region corresponding broadly to the modern Kandahar and Kabul territories of Afghanistan — a position that established the ancestral character of the Saxena clan as one of high ministerial and statecraft service. The principal sources recording his identity are the Padma Purana (Uttar Khanda), the Garuda Purana, and the Chitragupta Vamshaavali.

✦ The Name

The name Matiman derives from the Sanskrit mati, meaning intelligence, understanding, or wisdom, combined with the suffix man indicating possession of that quality — meaning one possessed of intelligence or wisdom. It is a name of intellectual distinction, consistent with the ministerial and advisory role attributed to Matiman in the tradition. The community name Saxena is derived from the Sanskrit Shakasena or Shak-sena — the army or people of the Shaka region — identifying the clan's ancestral geographic and political association with the Shak territory, which in the tradition corresponds to the Gandhar or Kabul region where Matiman is recorded as having served as minister.

✦ Lineage

  • Father: Chitragupta — the divine scribe in the court of Yama, keeper of the karmic records of all living beings, and presiding deity of the Kayastha community.
  • Mother: Iravati — second wife of Chitragupta; mother of Charu, Sucharu, Chitra, Matiman, Himvan, Chitracharu, Chitracharan, and Atindriya.
  • Full brothers: Charu — progenitor of the Mathur clan; Sucharu — progenitor of the Gaur clan; Chitra — progenitor of the Bhatnagar clan; Himvan — progenitor of the Ambashtha clan; Chitracharu — progenitor of the Nigam clan; Chitracharan — progenitor of the Karna clan; Atindriya — progenitor of the Kulshrestha clan.
  • Paternal half-brothers: The four sons of Nandini — Bhanu, Vibhanu, Vishvabhanu, and Viryabhanu — progenitors respectively of the Srivastava, Suryadhwaja, Valmiki, and Asthana clans.
  • Wife: A Nagakanya — a daughter of Vasuki, the king of serpents, as recorded in the Padma Purana.
  • Descendants: The Saxena community of Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas, historically associated with the Gandhar and Shak region.

✦ Sacred Thread Investiture

The Padma Purana records that all twelve sons of Chitragupta, including Matiman, were invested with the sacred thread — the yajnopavita — establishing their twice-born status and their right to study the Vedas and perform Vedic rites.

✦ Geographic and Community Association

The community tradition, as recorded in the Chitragupta Vamshaavali, associates Matiman specifically with ministerial service in the kingdom of Gandhar — the ancient northwest frontier kingdom corresponding to the modern Kandahar and Kabul region, known in the Mahabharata as the homeland of Gandhari, wife of King Dhritarashtra. Matiman's role as a minister — a mantri — in this kingdom established the Saxena clan's ancestral identity as one of high political counsel and statecraft, a character that has distinguished the Saxena subdivision of the Kayastha community throughout its historical tradition.
