Vibhanu is the second son of Chitragupta born of his first wife Nandini, daughter of the sage Shiva Sharma, and the second among the four sons of Nandini. He is the founding ancestor of the Suryadhwaja subdivision of the Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha community. The name Vibhanu is a compound of the Sanskrit prefix vi, indicating distinction or intensity, and bhanu, meaning radiance or the sun. The community name Suryadhwaja is itself a compound of Surya, the sun god, and dhwaja, meaning banner or standard, identifying the descendants of Vibhanu as those who bear the sun as their standard — a designation with strong solar and martial connotations.
