About

Vishvabhanu — Third Son of Chitragupta and Nandini, Progenitor of the Valmiki Kayastha Clan

Vishvabhanu · Vishvabhanu Chitragupta · Valmiki Adi-Purush · Balmik Adi-Purush

Vishvabhanu is the third son of Chitragupta born of his first wife Nandini, daughter of the sage Shiva Sharma, and the third among the four sons of Nandini. He is the founding ancestor of the Valmiki subdivision — also rendered as Balmik — of the Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha community. The principal sources recording his identity are the Padma Purana (Uttar Khanda), the Garuda Purana, and the Chitragupta Vamshaavali.

✦ The Name

The name Vishvabhanu is a compound of vishva, meaning all or universal, and bhanu, meaning radiance or the sun — carrying the meaning of one who is the light of all or the universal radiance. It is an expansive solar name, suggesting the all-pervading quality of luminosity. The community name Valmiki, borne by his descendants, shares its form with the name of the celebrated Vedic sage and author of the Ramayana, Valmiki — himself associated in one tradition with the Angirasa lineage. The precise connection between the clan name and the sage Valmiki is preserved in the community tradition, which regards the name as an honorific association with the great poet-sage.

✦ Lineage

  • Father: Chitragupta — the divine scribe in the court of Yama, keeper of the karmic records of all living beings, and presiding deity of the Kayastha community.
  • Mother: Nandini — first wife of Chitragupta, daughter of the sage Shiva Sharma; mother of Bhanu, Vibhanu, Vishvabhanu, and Viryabhanu.
  • Full brothers: Bhanu — eldest son of Nandini and progenitor of the Srivastava clan; Vibhanu — progenitor of the Suryadhwaja clan; Viryabhanu — progenitor of the Asthana clan.
  • Paternal half-brothers: The eight sons of Iravati — Charu, Sucharu, Chitra, Matiman, Himvan, Chitracharu, Chitracharan, and Atindriya — progenitors respectively of the Mathur, Gaur, Bhatnagar, Saxena, Ambashtha, Nigam, Karna, and Kulshrestha clans.
  • Wife: A Nagakanya — a daughter of Vasuki, the king of serpents, as recorded in the Padma Purana.
  • Descendants: The Valmiki community of Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas.

✦ Sacred Thread Investiture

The Padma Purana records that all twelve sons of Chitragupta, including Vishvabhanu, were invested with the sacred thread — the yajnopavita — establishing their twice-born status and their right to study the Vedas and perform Vedic rites.

✦ Geographic and Community Association

The Valmiki clan founded by Vishvabhanu is one of the four subdivisions of the Chitraguptavanshi Kayastha community tracing their descent through the Nandini branch. The clan name's association with the sage Valmiki situates this subdivision within a broader literary and spiritual heritage, connecting the scribal and administrative tradition of the Kayasthas with the poetic and devotional legacy of the composer of the Ramayana.
