Amritaprabha is recorded in later Puranic and regional traditions as the queen consort of Bhanumantha — also known as Sukaushala — the king of Dakshina Kosala, the southern Kosala kingdom corresponding to the region of modern Chhattisgarh. She is the mother of Kaushalya, the eldest wife of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya and the mother of Rama, the avatara of Vishnu and protagonist of the Valmiki Ramayana. Amritaprabha is not named in the Valmiki Ramayana, which does not identify Kaushalya's mother at any point in the text. Her name is preserved in later Puranic accounts and the regional devotional tradition of Chhattisgarh.
