The Sanskrit name Sudeva — written Sudevā — is a compound of su (good, excellent, auspicious) and deva (god, divine being, the shining one). The compound means the excellent god, the auspicious divine one, the supremely divine. It is one of the tradition's most straightforwardly auspicious names. His alternate name Chakshu — written Cakṣu — derives from chakshus (eye, the faculty of sight, the seeing organ) and means the seeing one, he of the eye, the clear-sighted one. The same root gives the Sanskrit word for the sense of sight. These two names — Sudeva (the divine one) and Chakshu (the clear-sighted one) — belong to the same individual in different textual traditions and are reconciled by the genealogical position they occupy in the same succession: both are clearly son of Chanchu, father of Vijaya.
