Tvastr is the third son of Shukracharya and Urjasvati; the brother of Shanda, Amarka, and Dharaatra; and one of the four sons of Shukracharya named in the Mahabharata (Adi Parva, Chapter 65) as priests of the Asuras. His entire canonical record is the single verse in the Mahabharata that names him in this list alongside his brothers. No episode, marriage, children, or further personal history is recorded for him in any primary canonical source. A critical note on the name: Tvastr is one of the most widely recurring names in the Hindu tradition and is shared by several entirely distinct figures. The divine craftsman Tvastr — also called Vishvakarma — is one of the twelve Adityas, the son of Kashyapa and Aditi, the builder of divine weapons and celestial palaces, the father of Sanjna (who married Vivasvat the sun god). There is also a Tvastr who is the father of Vritra in some Puranic accounts. Shukracharya's son Tvastr is a distinct figure from all of these; his identification as a priest of the Asuras is his sole canonical fact.

The Sanskrit name Tvastr — written Tvaṣṭṛ — derives from the root tvaksh (to pare, to fashion, to carpenter, to shape by cutting) and means the fashioner, the craftsman, the shaper. As the name of the divine craftsman Tvastr (Vishvakarma) it describes the cosmic artisan who shapes divine weapons and celestial vehicles. As the name of Shukracharya's son it may simply be an inherited name from the broader Brahmin tradition of naming children after celebrated divine figures. No canonical source explains why this particular son of Shukracharya was given this name.
