Kalpa is the elder of the two sons born of Dhruva — the celebrated child-devotee of Vishnu, son of Uttanapada and Suniti, and grandson of Svayambhuva Manu — and his first wife Bhrami, daughter of the Prajapati Shishumara. He is named alongside his brother Vatsara in the Bhagavata Purana, Canto 4, Chapter 10, verse 1, where the sage Maitreya narrates Dhruva's marriage to Bhrami and the birth of these two sons to the listener Vidura. The Bhagavata Purana does not elaborate any narrative episode specific to Kalpa, nor does it record his marriage, his descendants, or any further detail about his life or reign. The Puranic Encyclopaedia likewise records him only as the elder son of Dhruva and Bhrami without further information. His name derives from the Sanskrit kalpa, which denotes a cosmic aeon — the full day of Brahma comprising fourteen Manvantaras — as well as the meaning of capable, competent, or one who is able. Beyond his genealogical identification as the elder son of Dhruva and Bhrami, no primary source consulted provides additional information about this figure.

- Father: Dhruva — son of Uttanapada and Suniti; grandson of Svayambhuva Manu and great-grandson of Brahma; the celebrated devotee of Vishnu who performed extraordinary austerities as a child of five in the forest of Madhuvana and was granted by Vishnu the immovable position of the Pole Star, where he resides sustaining the stars and planets until the end of the present Kalpa.
- Mother: Bhrami — daughter of the Prajapati Shishumara; named in the Bhagavata Purana, Canto 4, Chapter 10 as the first wife of Dhruva; her name means she who revolves or the revolving one, a name associated with the circular movement of the celestial sphere.

Dhruva had three sons in the Bhagavata Purana account: Kalpa and Vatsara by his wife Bhrami, and Utkala by his wife Ila, daughter of Vayu the wind-god. Utkala, though the eldest — or in some interpretations the most spiritually advanced — renounced the world entirely and did not accept kingship. The elders and ministers therefore coronated Vatsara as king after Dhruva's ascension. Kalpa's position in this succession is not explicitly resolved in the Bhagavata Purana Canto 4, Chapter 13 account, which mentions Vatsara as the one coronated without specifying Kalpa's fate or position. The primary source is silent on this point and the profile reflects that silence honestly.
