Udavasu appears in the genealogical lists of the Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana as the immediate successor to Mithi in the Videha royal succession, and his principal significance is as a link in the lineage that eventually produced the philosopher-kings known by the dynastic title Janaka, among whose descendants was Siradhvaja Janaka, the father of Sita in the Ramayana tradition.

The dynastic epithets Vaideha, meaning one of the Videha country, and Maithila, meaning one of Mithila, apply to all kings of this line including Udavasu by virtue of his position within the succession. The hereditary title Janaka, meaning progenitor or father, which was borne by many kings of this dynasty as a throne name rather than a personal name, is traceable through the line from Nimi onward, though Udavasu himself is identified in the sources primarily by his personal name rather than by the dynastic title.
