The Videha dynasty is a branch of the Solar dynasty descending from Ikshvaku, the primordial solar king and son of Manu Vaivasvata, through Nimi, the legendary founder of the Videha kingdom at Mithila. Sudhriti's position in both Puranic succession lists places him as one of the later kings of this line, receiving the kingdom from his father Mahavira and transmitting it to his own successor.

The line achieved its greatest prominence through Siradhvaja Janaka, king of Mithila, who was the father of Sita, the consort of Rama. By the time Sudhriti appears in the succession, the dynasty has descended many generations beyond this celebrated period, and the Puranas record the later Videha kings through genealogical enumeration alone.
