About

Hrasvaroma — King of the Videha Line, Son of Swarnaroma

Hrasvaroma · Hrasvaromaka

Hrasvaroma is a king of the Videha royal dynasty, recorded in the Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana as the son and successor of Swarnaroma, himself a king of the Videha line. The Videha dynasty is a branch of the Solar dynasty descending from Ikshvaku, the primordial solar king and son of Manu Vaivasvata, through Nimi, the legendary founder of the Videha kingdom at Mithila. Hrasvaroma holds a position of particular genealogical significance in the Videha succession: the Valmiki Ramayana records in the Bala Kanda that he was the father of two sons, Siradhvaja Janaka and Kushadhvaja, whose marriages to daughters and whose daughters' marriages to princes of Ayodhya forged the celebrated alliance between the houses of Mithila and Ayodhya. The Vishnu Purana and Bhagavata Purana record Siradhvaja as his successor on the throne of Mithila.

✦ The Name

The name Hrasvaroma is a Sanskrit compound formed from hrasva, meaning short, small, or brief, and roma, meaning hair, bristle, or the fine filaments covering a surface. The compound thus carries the literal sense of one with short hair or fine short bristles. The name stands in notable contrast to those of his father Swarnaroma, meaning one with golden hair, and his grandfather Mahiroma, meaning one whose hairs are as vast as the earth, both of whom share the same roma element. This clustering of three consecutive kings in the Videha succession — Mahiroma, Swarnaroma, and Hrasvaroma — whose names are each built upon the element roma is a distinctive feature of this portion of the dynastic list and may reflect a deliberate naming tradition within this segment of the lineage. The name does not appear to be shared by any other prominent figure in the principal primary sources consulted.

✦ Lineage

  • Dynasty: Videha branch of the Solar dynasty (Suryavamsha), descending from Ikshvaku through Nimi, founder of the Videha kingdom at Mithila
  • Father: Swarnaroma, king of Videha
  • Elder son: Siradhvaja Janaka, who succeeds Hrasvaroma as king of Mithila, celebrated as the father of Sita and one of the greatest philosopher-kings of the Solar dynasty
  • Younger son: Kushadhvaja, who is installed by his elder brother Siradhvaja as king of Sankasya following Siradhvaja's defeat of Sudhanvan, the former king of that realm; father of Mandavi and Shrutakirti

✦ Role in the Videha Succession

Hrasvaroma appears in the Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana within the enumerated succession lists of the Videha kings as the son of Swarnaroma and the predecessor of Siradhvaja Janaka. The Valmiki Ramayana, in the Bala Kanda, provides the fuller narrative context for his reign: when Hrasvaroma retired to the forest to practise asceticism in his later years, he placed Siradhvaja on the throne of Mithila and entrusted him with the guardianship and care of his younger son Kushadhvaja. Neither Purana records any distinct narrative episode or personal quality associated with Hrasvaroma's own reign; his significance in the textual record lies in his fatherhood of the two princes whose actions and alliances are central to the Ramayana narrative.

✦ Textual Variants and Inconsistencies

The Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda, Sarga 71, records explicitly that Hrasvaroma had two sons: Siradhvaja, the elder, and Kushadhvaja, the younger, with Siradhvaja himself reciting this genealogy before the assembled sages and kings of Ayodhya at the pre-wedding ceremonies. The Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana, whose primary concern is the succession of the throne, record Siradhvaja as the son and successor of Hrasvaroma without contradiction; however, in certain Puranic recensions the name Kushadhvaja appears in the succession list as a successor of Siradhvaja rather than as his brother and contemporary. This positional difference between the Puranic genealogical lists and the Ramayana narrative account reflects the different purposes of the two genres: the Puranas enumerate throne-succession while the Ramayana preserves the fuller familial picture. The Valmiki Ramayana's direct speech by Siradhvaja himself, identifying Kushadhvaja as his younger brother and co-son of Hrasvaroma, is the most explicit primary testimony on the question of Kushadhvaja's parentage.

✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy

Hrasvaroma belongs to the Videha branch of the Solar dynasty. His father Swarnaroma was the son of Mahiroma, who was the son of Kirtirata, who was the son of Mahidhraka, who was the son of Vibudha, who was the son of Devamidha, who was the son of Kritaratha, who was the son of Pratibandhaka, who was the son of Maru, who was the son of Haryasva, who was the son of Dhrshtaketu, who was the son of Sudhriti, who was the son of Mahavira, who was himself the son of Brihadrata. Through his elder son Siradhvaja Janaka, Hrasvaroma is the grandfather of Sita, the consort of Rama of Ayodhya. Through his younger son Kushadhvaja, he is the grandfather of Mandavi, who married Bharata of Ayodhya, and Shrutakirti, who married Shatrughna of Ayodhya. Hrasvaroma thus stands as the direct ancestral link through whom the Videha royal house became joined by marriage to the Ikshvaku royal house of Ayodhya across two generations of his granddaughters.
