Sudeva is a son of Devaka, a chief of the Kukura branch of the Yadava confederation and the paternal uncle of Kamsa, the king of Mathura. He is one of four sons of Devaka recorded in the Bhagavata Purana alongside Devavan, Upadeva, and Devavardhan. He is the full brother of the seven daughters of Devaka — Dhritadeva, Shantideva, Upadevi, Shrideva, Devarakshita, Sahadeva, and Devaki — all of whom were given collectively in marriage to Vasudeva, son of Shurasena of the Vrishni clan. Through his youngest sister Devaki's son Krishna — the divine hero and avatar of Vishnu, central figure of the Mahabharata, the Harivamsa, and the Bhagavata Purana — Sudeva is Krishna's maternal uncle.
