About
Shantideva — Daughter of Devaka, Wife of Vasudeva
Shantideva · Śāntideva · second daughter of Devaka · mother of Bhoja and Vijaya
Shantideva is the second of the seven daughters of Devaka, a chief of the Kukura branch of the Yadava confederation and the paternal uncle of Kamsa, the king of Mathura. She is one of seven sisters given collectively in marriage to Vasudeva, son of Shurasena of the Vrishni clan, as part of a dynastic alliance within the Yadava confederation. Her sisters in this alliance are Dhritadeva the eldest, Upadevi, Shrideva, Devarakshita, Sahadeva, and Devaki the youngest. Shantideva is recorded in the Harivamsa Purana as the mother of two sons by Vasudeva — Bhoja and Vijaya. She appears in the Harivamsa Chapter 35 enumeration of Vasudeva's fourteen wives and is corroborated in the Brahma Purana. She is the maternal aunt of Krishna, the divine hero and avatar of Vishnu born to her youngest sister Devaki, and of Balarama born to Rohini, another wife of Vasudeva.
✦ The Name
The name Shantideva is a Sanskrit compound of shanti and deva. Shanti means peace, tranquillity, or the cessation of agitation; deva means god or divine being. The compound may be rendered as "she of divine peace," "the tranquil divine one," or "she in whom divine peace abides." It is a name with both royal and spiritual resonance, appropriate to a princess of a senior Yadava household.
✦ Lineage
- Father: Devaka, chief of the Kukura branch of the Yadava confederation, paternal uncle of Kamsa the king of Mathura; he gave all seven of his daughters to Vasudeva in a single dynastic alliance
- Sisters: Dhritadeva the eldest, Upadevi, Shrideva, Devarakshita, and Sahadeva — all wives of Vasudeva by the same alliance; and Devaki the youngest, who became the mother of Krishna
- Husband: Vasudeva, son of Shurasena of the Vrishni clan, ruler of the Surasena janapada; father of Krishna and Balarama by other wives
- Son: Bhoja, recorded in the Harivamsa as a son of Shantideva and Vasudeva; not to be confused with the Bhoja clan designation used for other Yadava groups
- Son: Vijaya, recorded in the Harivamsa as a son of Shantideva and Vasudeva; not to be confused with other figures of the same name in the epic and Puranic tradition
✦ Textual Placement
Shantideva appears in the Harivamsa Purana's Chapter 35 enumeration of Vasudeva's fourteen wives, where she is listed among the daughters of Devaka given to Vasudeva. The Brahma Purana corroborates her placement in the same sequence. Her sons Bhoja and Vijaya are named in the Harivamsa's genealogical passages recording the children of Vasudeva's various wives. Beyond her genealogical placement and the naming of her two sons, Shantideva receives no independent narrative treatment in any surviving primary text. Her profile accordingly reflects the honest limits of the textual record.
✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy
Through her marriage to Vasudeva, Shantideva connects the Kukura branch of the Yadava confederation — through her father Devaka — with the Vrishni branch through her husband. Her sons Bhoja and Vijaya belong to the generation of Vasudeva's children that includes Krishna and the offspring of his other wives, placing them among the half-siblings and cousins of Krishna within the Vrishni household at Mathura and later at Dvaraka.
