Devaka (Son of Akrura) — Yadava Prince of the Vrishni-Kukura Alliance

Devaka · Sudeva

Devaka is a Yadava prince recorded in the Puranic genealogical tradition as the son of Akrura — the celebrated Vrishni chief and devotee of Krishna — and Sutanu, a princess of the Kukura-Andhaka line. He appears in the genealogical lists of the Yadava lineage and is notable primarily for his place in the dynastic record. His profile is of limited narrative scope in the extant primary sources, which name him without attributing substantial independent episodes to him. The name Sudeva is recorded in the Harivamsha recension as the preferred variant for this son of Akrura in that tradition's account of his parentage, though the Harivamsha's account of Akrura's sons overall differs from the tradition attested by Pargiter.

It is essential to distinguish this Devaka from two other figures of the same name in the Yadava genealogy: first, Devaka the son of Ahuka and brother of Ugrasena, who was the father of Devaki (the mother of Krishna) and whose sons were Devavan, Upadeva, Sudeva, and Devarakshit — a man of the immediately preceding generation; and second, the various minor figures bearing the name Devaka mentioned in other contexts across the epics and Puranas. The Devaka profiled here is the son of Akrura, belonging to the next generation down from Ahuka's children.

✦ The Name

Devaka is derived from the Sanskrit root deva (god, divine being) with the suffix -ka, conveying the sense of "the divine one" or "he who is godlike." Sudeva, the variant form attested in the Harivamsha tradition for this figure, is a compound of su (good, excellent) and deva (god), meaning "the excellent divine one" or "the truly godlike one." These names follow a clear pattern: the elder Devaka (Ahuka's son) had a son also named Sudeva, so the recurrence of this name-pair across two generations of closely related Yadava families reflects a common naming convention within the tradition.

✦ Lineage

  • Father: Akrura — son of Shvaphalka and Gandini; foremost Vrishni Yadava chief, celebrated devotee of Krishna, bearer of the Syamantaka jewel, and commander of the Yadava forces.
  • Mother (Pargiter / Bhagavata commentary tradition): Sutanu — princess of the Kukura-Andhaka line, daughter of Ahuka or of Ugrasena according to differing recensions.
  • Brother: Upadevaka — the second son of Akrura and Sutanu in the Pargiter tradition; also known as Upadeva in the Harivamsha and Vishnu Purana recensions.
  • Paternal grandfather: Shvaphalka — Vrishni chief of great virtue, whose presence in any kingdom is said in the Bhagavata Purana to have caused rain during drought.
  • Paternal grandmother: Gandini — daughter of the king of Kashi.

✦ Textual Variants and Inconsistencies

As noted above, the Harivamsha (Chapter 34) names Akrura's sons as Prasena and Upadeva (born of Ugraseni, daughter of Ugrasena), making no mention of Devaka or Sudeva as sons of Akrura. The Vishnu Purana (Book IV, Chapter XIV) names the sons of Akrura as Devavat and Upadeva. The Pargiter tradition (synthesising Vayu and Matsya Purana data) gives the sons as Devaka and Upadevaka, born of Sutanu. The Harivamsha's identification of one of Akrura's sons as Sudeva — the name-equivalent of Devaka in the Pargiter tradition — is the basis on which cross-textual identification of Devaka and Sudeva as variant names for the same figure has been proposed in secondary scholarship. This identification is plausible but not textually certain, as the Harivamsha's account of the mother's name and of the other son's name also differ from the Pargiter tradition.

Furthermore, the name Sudeva appears in the Harivamsha (Chapter 37) as one of the four sons of Devaka the son of Ahuka — a completely different individual in the immediately preceding generation. Care must be taken not to conflate the Sudeva who is Devaka-son-of-Ahuka's son with the Sudeva who is proposed as an alternate name for Devaka-son-of-Akrura. These are distinct figures in different generational positions.

✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy

Through his father Akrura, Devaka belongs to the Vrishni branch of the Yadava confederacy, descending from Shvaphalka. Through his mother Sutanu (in the Pargiter tradition), he belongs by maternal lineage to the Kukura-Andhaka branch descending from Ahuka. His father Akrura was the cousin of Kamsa and of Kunti; Akrura was also connected by marriage alliance to Krishna's family through Sutanu's lineage. Devaka thus occupies a position at the intersection of the two most prominent Yadava sub-lineages of the late Dvapara Yuga period.

  • Vishnu Purana, Book IV, Chapter XIV (trans. H. H. Wilson, 1840) — names Devavat and Upadeva as sons of Akrura; the footnote to this passage notes textual variation across the Matsya and Padma Puranas regarding attribution of these sons.
  • Harivamsha, Harivamsha Parva, Chapter 34 (Sanskrit text) — records Akrura's sons from Ugraseni as Prasena and Upadeva; provides the Harivamsha baseline against which the Pargiter tradition's Devaka-and-Upadevaka must be compared.
  • Harivamsha, Harivamsha Parva, Chapter 37 (trans. M. N. Dutt) — records Sudeva as a son of Devaka son of Ahuka, establishing the same name in the immediately senior generation and requiring disambiguation.
