Medhatithi is the eighth of the ten sons of Priyavrata and Barhishmati, named in the Bhagavata Purana, Canto 5. He was appointed by his father as the ruler of Shakadvipa — the sixth of the seven great island-continents of the Puranic earth, named for the shaka tree that grows there. His name is a compound of medha, meaning intelligence, wisdom, or the offering of the brain — and tithi, meaning a lunar day or a sacred occasion, yielding the combined sense of one of sacred intelligence or the wise one of the auspicious day. The name Medhatithi is also shared by a Vedic sage credited with certain Rigvedic hymns, but that figure is entirely distinct and belongs to a different lineage and period; the Medhatithi who is the son of Priyavrata is a Puranic figure whose significance is genealogical. Beyond his appointment as king of Shakadvipa, no independent narrative is attributed to him in the primary sources consulted.
