Bashkala is a Daitya figure recorded in the Bhagavata Purana as one of two sons born to Anuhlada — the second son of the Daitya king Hiranyakashipu — through Anuhlada's wife Surya. He belongs to the third generation of the great Daitya lineage descended from the primordial sage Kashyapa and his wife Diti. This profile addresses specifically the Bashkala attested as a son of Anuhlada in the Bhagavata Purana (6.18.16). The textual tradition assigns the name Bashkala to more than one Daitya figure across different genealogical branches — most notably also to a son of Samhlada in the Agni Purana and Vishnu Purana, and to a direct son of Hiranyakashipu in certain Mahabharata passages — and those ambiguities are addressed in the variants section below. The Sanskrit word bashkala is glossed in the lexicographical tradition as meaning "wide," "great," or "warrior," though the Monier-Williams dictionary notes these meanings without citing a specific authority. The name does not share the hlad-root pattern characteristic of the names of Hiranyakashipu's four sons and appears to belong to a distinct naming tradition within the Daitya lineage. The variant spellings Vashkala and Vaskala found in some editions represent alternate manuscript readings of the same Sanskrit name.

The Bhagavata Purana (6.18.16) places Bashkala as a son of Anuhlada. The Agni Purana (Chapter 19) and the Vishnu Purana (I.21) place a Bashkala as a son of Samhlada — a different son of Hiranyakashipu — making that figure Bashkala's cousin in Bhagavata Purana terms rather than a sibling. The Mahabharata's Adi Parva (Chapters 59 and 65) lists Vashkala as a direct fifth son of Hiranyakashipu, removing him from the third generation entirely. The Mahabharata's Amshavatara Parva (Chapter 67, verse 9) further identifies the Daitya Vashkala as the being whose partial incarnation became Bhagadatta, king of Pragjyotisha. Whether that Vashkala is the Bhagavata Purana's son of Anuhlada or the Agni Purana's son of Samhlada — or a conflation of both — cannot be established from the texts themselves. These three genealogical placements of the same name across different texts represent an unresolved inconsistency in the Puranic record.
