About

Kriti — Wife of Samhlada, Daitya Matriarch

Kriti · Kritih

Kriti is a Daitya woman recorded in the Bhagavata Purana as the wife of Samhlada, the eldest son of the demon king Hiranyakashipu and his wife Kayadhu, and the mother of Panchajana. She belongs to the first generation of the Hiranyakashipu lineage through the elder branch, her husband Samhlada being the firstborn among Hiranyakashipu's four sons — Samhlada, Anuhlada, Hlada, and the celebrated devotee Prahlada. Kriti's profile in the primary sources is limited to a single genealogical statement in the sixth canto of the Bhagavata Purana; no narrative episodes involving her are preserved in surviving texts.

✦ The Name

The name Kriti derives from the Sanskrit root kri, meaning to do or to make, and carries the sense of one who acts, a deed accomplished, or an achievement. As a feminine noun it may connote excellence of action or creative work. The name is not unique to this figure within the broader Sanskrit corpus — a Kriti appears among the sons of the lunar-dynasty king Nahusha in certain Puranic genealogies, though that is an entirely different lineage and a different figure sharing only the name. No epithets or alternative names for this Daitya Kriti are preserved in the sources.

✦ Lineage

  • Husband: Samhlada — eldest son of Hiranyakashipu, the Daitya king descended from Kashyapa and Diti, and of Kayadhu, daughter of the Danava Jambha. Samhlada is the firstborn among four brothers and belongs to the senior branch of the Hiranyakashipu family.
  • Son (Bhagavata Purana): Panchajana — the sole son attributed to Kriti by name in the Bhagavata Purana, Sixth Canto, Chapter Eighteen.

✦ Textual Variants

A significant divergence exists between the two principal Puranic accounts of Samhlada's offspring. The Bhagavata Purana, in its sixth canto's genealogical survey of Daitya lineages, names Kriti as Samhlada's wife and records only one son from her: Panchajana. The Vishnu Purana, in its account of the families of the Daityas in the first book, lists three sons belonging to Sanhrada — Ayushman, Shivi, and Vashkala — but does not name their mother at all and makes no mention of Panchajana. The two accounts are thus divergent on two points simultaneously: the names of the sons recorded, and the complete absence of the mother's name in the Vishnu Purana account. Whether the Vishnu Purana's three sons and the Bhagavata Purana's one son represent variant traditions about the same family, or whether the texts are drawing on different genealogical recensions, cannot be resolved from the surviving evidence. It is also possible that the Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana each preserve a partial list of what some common source regarded as a fuller set of children. No other primary text examined provides a consolidated account that names Kriti as mother alongside all four names together.

✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy

Through her husband Samhlada, Kriti is connected to the central lineage of the Daityas as described in the Puranas. Samhlada's father Hiranyakashipu was the eldest son of the sage Kashyapa by his wife Diti, daughter of the Prajapati Daksha. Hiranyakashipu's brother was Hiranyaksha, and his sister was Simhika, who by the Danava Viprachitti became the mother of Rahu. Among Samhlada's own brothers, the youngest, Prahlada, is by far the most celebrated in the tradition as an exemplary devotee of Vishnu despite his demonic birth; Prahlada's son was Virochana, and Virochana's son was Bali, the Daitya emperor famed in the Vamana episode. Samhlada's position as the eldest of the four brothers places Kriti and her son Panchajana at the head of the collateral lines descending from Hiranyakashipu alongside the more celebrated Prahlada branch.

Primary Sources

  • Bhagavata Purana, Canto 6, Chapter 18: The sole primary source that names Kriti explicitly as the wife of Samhlada; records Panchajana as the son born to her from Samhlada; situates this within a broader genealogical account of Daitya and Danava lineages descending from Kashyapa.
  • Vishnu Purana, Book 1, Chapter 21: Lists the sons of Sanhrada as Ayushman, Shivi, and Vashkala without naming their mother; provides the collateral genealogy of the Hiranyakashipu family including Prahlada's line through Virochana and Bali.
