About

Ayushman — Daitya Prince, Son of Samhlada, Grandson of Hiranyakashipu

Ayushman · Ayusman · Āyuṣmān

Ayushman is a Daitya figure of the third generation of the lineage descended from the primordial sage Kashyapa and his wife Diti. He is named in the Agni Purana and the Vishnu Purana as the first of three sons of Samhlada — himself a son of the great Daitya king Hiranyakashipu. Ayushman appears in no narrative episode in any primary source consulted. His textual record consists solely of his name in two genealogical lists. This profile is accordingly kept brief in honest reflection of that limited base.

✦ The Name

The Sanskrit word ayushman derives from ayus, meaning life, lifespan, or vital force, combined with the suffix -man conveying possession of a quality. The name therefore means "one possessed of long life," "long-lived," or "endowed with vitality." It is a common auspicious epithet in Sanskrit literature, used both as a personal name and as a form of respectful address between equals. Its use here as a proper name within the Daitya lineage follows a pattern observable across the Puranic tradition of bestowing conventionally auspicious names upon demonic figures without ironic intent.

✦ Lineage

  • Paternal great-grandfather: Kashyapa — the primordial sage, son of Marichi who was himself a mind-born son of Brahma; the progenitor of the Daitya race through his wife Diti, and of the gods through his wife Aditi.
  • Paternal great-grandmother: Diti — a daughter of the Prajapati Daksha; one of the thirteen principal wives of Kashyapa; mother of Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha, the two founding kings of the Daitya race.
  • Paternal grandfather: Hiranyakashipu — the great Daitya king who obtained near-invulnerability through severe austerities and a boon granted by Brahma, conquered the three worlds, and was ultimately slain by the Narasimha (man-lion) avatar of Vishnu.
  • Paternal grandmother: Kayadhu — wife of Hiranyakashipu; daughter of the Danava Jambha and a descendant of the Danava race.
  • Father: Samhlada — eldest son of Hiranyakashipu in the Bhagavata Purana's ordering; a Daitya king of the second generation whose partial incarnation in the Dvapara Yuga, according to the Mahabharata's Adi Parva, became Shalya, the king of the Madra kingdom and a commander-in-chief of the Kaurava army in the Kurukshetra War.
  • Grand-paternal uncle: Hiranyaksha — the younger son of Kashyapa and Diti; slain by Vishnu in the Varaha (boar) avatar.
  • Paternal uncles: Anuhlada — second son of Hiranyakashipu, whose partial incarnation became Dhrishtaketu, king of Chedi; Hlada — third son of Hiranyakashipu, father of the notorious Daityas Vatapi and Ilvala; and Prahlada — the youngest and most celebrated of the four sons of Hiranyakashipu, revered throughout the Puranic tradition as the supreme Daitya devotee of Vishnu.
  • Brothers: Shibi — whose partial incarnation, per the Mahabharata's Amshavatara Parva, became the king Druma of the Kimpurushas; and Bashkala — whose partial incarnation became Bhagadatta, the celebrated elephant-warrior king of Pragjyotisha.

✦ Textual Variants and Inconsistencies

The Agni Purana (Chapter 19) and the Vishnu Purana (Amsha 1, Chapter 21) name Ayushman as one of three sons of Samhlada. The Mahabharata's Adi Parva (Chapters 59 and 65) lists five sons of Hiranyakashipu directly — Prahlada, Samhlada, Anuhlada, Shibi, and Vashkala — without naming Ayushman at all, and without distinguishing Shibi and Bashkala as grandsons rather than sons. The Bhagavata Purana (6.18.14) records only one son for Samhlada, named Pancajana through his wife Kriti, again without mentioning Ayushman. Ayushman thus appears only in two Puranic genealogical catalogues and is absent from both the major epic account and the Bhagavata Purana's parallel account of the same lineage.
