Harivarsha is the third of the nine sons born to Agnidhara and the apsara Purvachitti. Agnidhara was the son of Priyavrata, who was the son of Svayambhuva Manu, the progenitor of the present human lineage. Purvachitti was a celestial dancer sent by Brahma to draw Agnidhara away from his penances; she became his wife, bore him nine sons, and thereafter returned to the higher realms. Harivarsha is the eponymous sovereign of Harivarsha, one of the nine territorial divisions of Jambudvipa assigned by Agnidhara to his sons. The name and the region are mentioned in the Bhagavata Purana and the Vishnu Purana. Beyond the assignment of his territory, the primary sources do not record individual narratives or descendants for Harivarsha.

Harivarsha is a compound of Hari and varsha. Hari is one of the most common names of Vishnu, meaning one who removes or takes away — understood in devotional contexts as the remover of sin, suffering, and the bonds of transmigration. Varsha means a tract of land, a division, or a region. The compound thus signifies the land or region of Hari. The Bhagavata Purana's cosmographic tradition presents this region as a place of particular religious merit and natural perfection, consistent with its name's Vaishnava associations.

The region is characterised in the broader cosmographic literature as a place of superior conditions, where the inhabitants live long and virtuous lives untroubled by the hardships that mark existence in Bharatavarsha, the region allotted to Nabhi's descendants.

Harivarsha is the great-grandson of Svayambhuva Manu through the line of Priyavrata and Agnidhara. His brother Nabhi fathered Rishabha, through whom the lineage of Bharata and the historical dynasties of Bharatavarsha descend. Harivarsha himself is recorded in the tradition solely as the eponymous sovereign of his varsha; no sons or further lineage are attributed to him in the principal Puranic sources consulted.
