Ramya is the fifth of the nine sons born to Agnidhara and the apsara Purvachitti. Agnidhara was a son of Priyavrata, and Priyavrata was a son of Svayambhuva Manu, the first Manu of the current cosmic age. Purvachitti was a celestial dancer of the heavens, sent by Brahma to interrupt Agnidhara's austerities; she became his wife and bore nine sons. Upon his sons reaching maturity, Agnidhara divided Jambudvipa among them. Ramya received the territory known as Ramyakavarsha, one of the nine divisions of the continent. The Bhagavata Purana and the Vishnu Purana both name this varsha among the nine divisions of Jambudvipa. Beyond the assignment of his territory, the primary sources record no individual episodes or descendants for Ramya.

Ramya in Sanskrit means pleasing, beautiful, or delightful. It is derived from the root ram, meaning to delight or to rejoice. The name and its derivative Ramyaka thus describe a region of natural beauty and pleasantness. The name is consistent with the Puranic cosmographic convention of presenting the non-Bharata varshas as regions of superior natural conditions, where inhabitants enjoy long lives free from conflict and hardship.

Ramyakavarsha is situated to the north of Ilavritavarsha, between specific mountain ranges described in the Puranic cosmographic accounts. The Bhagavata Purana places it among the northern varshas of Jambudvipa. Like the other non-central varshas, it is presented as a region of natural abundance where the human experience is characterised by ease and longevity rather than the suffering and brevity of life that mark Bharatavarsha.
✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy
Ramya is the great-grandson of Svayambhuva Manu, descending through Priyavrata and Agnidhara. His brother Nabhi's line through Rishabha and Bharata gave the subcontinent its name. No descendants of Ramya are named in the principal sources.
