Hiranvat is the sixth of the nine sons born to Agnidhara, the king of Jambudvipa, and the apsara Purvachitti. Agnidhara was a son of Priyavrata and the grandson of Svayambhuva Manu. Purvachitti was a celestial dancer of the higher realms who dwelt with Agnidhara as his wife, bore his nine sons, and then ascended back to the celestial spheres. When Agnidhara apportioned Jambudvipa among his sons, Hiranvat received the territory known as Hiranmayavarsha, named for the golden or golden-hued character attributed to the region. The Bhagavata Purana and the Vishnu Purana both include this varsha in their enumerations of the nine divisions of Jambudvipa. No personal episodes or descendants of Hiranvat are recorded in the primary sources.

Hiranvat is a variant form connected to Hiranya or Hiranmaya, both of which derive from the Sanskrit root hiran or hiranya, meaning gold or golden. Hiranmaya means made of gold or golden in character. The name of the varsha, Hiranmayavarsha, thus designates it as the golden region, a description consonant with the general Puranic convention of presenting the non-Bharata varshas of Jambudvipa as realms of supreme natural beauty and splendour. The personal name Hiranvat means one who possesses gold or one of golden nature.

✦ The Varsha of Hiranvat
Hiranmayavarsha is placed among the northern divisions of Jambudvipa in the cosmographic scheme of the Bhagavata Purana. It is bounded by mountain ranges described in the fifth skanda's cosmographic account. As with the other northern and southern varshas, the inhabitants are depicted in Puranic literature as beings of great longevity and purity, living in conditions of natural richness that contrast with the difficulties of life in Bharatavarsha.
✦ Connection to the Wider Genealogy
Hiranvat is a great-grandson of Svayambhuva Manu, descending through Priyavrata and Agnidhara. Through his brother Nabhi and Nabhi's son Rishabha, Hiranvat is a great-uncle of the sage-king Rishabha and a remote ancestor-collateral of the Bharata lineage. No descendants of Hiranvat are named in the principal Puranic sources.
